ENG http://www.yesterdaysnames.co.uk Yesterday's Names Yesterday's Names - a new source for discovering more about your ancestors! By indexing our large collection of Victorian parish magazines, and other journals, we are producing a wealth of information specifically designed for use by family history researchers. Our range includes parishes in a number of UK counties, and is growing all the time. Our web site contains details of the parishes currently indexed, along with the surnames featured in the indexes. ENG thttp://www.historicaldirectories.org/ this site has been revamped... ENG www.lostcousins.com. You can find people who are researching your family members. The way you do this is by entering the 1881 census information for your ancestors. Then, Lost Cousins will look for individuals who have registered the same census records that you have. If you find some, Lost Cousins will send you their contact information, and you can share information on your family. ENG www.familyhistoryonline.net This is the Federation of Family History Societies Pay per View site which now has over 50 million records (census, baptisms, marriages, burials etc) with approx 1 million records being added each month, Most of the records for Warwickshire are burials however I was intrigued by one of their latest additions - Smith baptisms of Birmingham 3,218 entries. Its worth having a look at their free index and also exploring the list of databases available. ENG CAMBRIA Academic looking for Kiwi with Cumbrian forebears An English academic has turned her attention to New Zealand in her worldwide search for descendants of people who emigrated from northern England last century. Margaret Shepherd, a fellow of Wolfson College at Cambridge University, is working on a research project which includes people who emigrated to New Zealand from Cumberland and Westmorland — now combined into one county, Cumbria. She said she had no idea how many emigrated to New Zealand but the response from people in Cumbria, and to a letter published in the Nelson Mail had convinced her to include a separate section and a special case study in her book on those who came here. “I am looking for information about people whose relatives went from Cambria to North America, Australia and New Zealand and anywhere else before World War I. “Even such a small thing as knowing that, for example, a great-grandfather or other relative came from Penrith, Carlisle or any other Cumbrian town or village in, the 19th or early 20th century,” she said. The county of Cumbria, which includes the famous Lakes District, was formed in 1974. It is England’s second-largest county and has been home to some of England’s literary greats, including poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and children’s author Beatrix Potter. One of Wordsworth’s most famous poems, Daffodils, was inspired by a visit to Ullswater in 1802. Dr Shepherd can be contacted at jsmeshepherdtalk2l.com * NZPA *The above URL does not make sense but there is a description of Margaret Shepherd at http://www.i10.org.uk/pooled/articles/BF_NEWSART/view.asp?Q=BF_NEWSART_81981 No doubt a letter care Wolfson College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, England would reach her.
