    1. Re: Shipping Records
    2. John Smith
    3. Lorraine He was Nicholas William James ANDREWARTHA, b. 1873 St Just in Penwith in Cornwall. He emigrated to Brisbane in 1892 in the company of a younger brother and was married at Herberton on 26 Jun 1893 to Alberta JOHNS, the d/o Stephen JOHNS and Jane WHITE. From that point, he just disappeared. A letter written by a Cornish solicitor in the early 1920s concerning the distribution of his maternal grandmother's estate noted that he was deceased but this solicitor went out of business many years ago and all his correspondence is 'missing', assumed destroyed. There is no apparent records in the Queensland or New South Wales deaths indexes published to date that could fit him and I understand that there are no records in the Herberton Mining Warden's reports that may refer to him. I have found no entries for him in the Queensland electoral rolls for the early 1900s. The 1926 death certificate for his spouse Alberta notes that she had been a resident in New South Wales for 33 years, and that would place her move from North Queensland about 1893, not long after their marriage. The JOHNS family history was recently completed by a JOHNs family researcher from Brisbane and she is even more perplexed than I am as to what may have happened back in 1893. I recently found a death record in South Africa's records for a William ANDREWARTHA born in England, a miner aged 21 who died on 21 Sep 1894 at Johannesburg Hospital. The certificate states parents unknown. My ANDREWARTHA records are quite extensive and looking through my indexes I can account for most William ANDREWARTHAs born c1873, with Nicholas William James ANDREWARTHA an exception, so I am trying to establish if the young man who married in Herberton in 1893 may have skipped town and headed for the gold-fields of Johannesburg. That about sums up what I know about him and the research on him to far. Any info you can find on him would be most appreciated. Incidentally, his brother's name was John Hill ANDREWARTHA. Cheers again from Sydney John
