There was a week longer gap than expected – Rootsweb servers seemed to be down last week and I could unsubscribe people and do the general maintenance, but here we are! Clwyd Family History Society, Your Old Books and Maps and The Dartmoor Press have all joined The Parish Chest Online Booksellers – (www.parishchest.com) NEW RELEASES FROM ARCHIVE CD BOOKS Kelly's Directory of Liverpool 1881 Contains a street and suburb directory, which lists the head of every household living in that street, as well as alphabetical lists of residents and their trades. 1881 Cornwall - St. Austell Registration District Registration District 296 RG11/2299-2305 1881 Cornwall - Truro Registration District Registration District 297 RG11/2306-2314 1881 Cornwall - Falmouth Registration District Registration District 298 RG11/2315-2320 1871 Census London St. Pancras (part 1) RG10 /199-229 1871 Census London St. Pancras (part 2) RG10 /230-250 1871 Census London Islington RG10/251-308 1871 Census London Hackney RG10/309-336 1871 Census London St.Giles RG10/337-352 1881 London Census: RD1 Sub Dist. 1A-1N - St. Mary Paddington (RG11/1-14 1881 London Census: RD1 Sub Dist. 2A-2G - St. John Paddington (RG11/15-21) Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire 1892 A typical Kelly's directory but with the added bonus of a large (A3 size) map of the county The Sheffield Local Register A fascinating collection of snippets from the earliest local Sheffield newspapers plus important events relating to Sheffield from 200 AD. Almost 2,500 pages of local news, obituaries and death notices, crimes and court cases, anecdotes, etc. Archive CD Books homepage - http://www.archivecdbooks.com WEBPAGE REVIEWS http://www.cornishsurnames.com/ Though I rarely review sites of businesses, or those selling products I thought this one was worth a mention, not least because there is quite a bit of information that can be obtained for free. The site is a few web pages based around Cornish Surnames, and how they developed. There is a bit of information about the way Cornish Surnames were given and developed, and a little bit of information about Cornwall in general. Although I did not like the large font the site was otherwise reasonably easy to navigate and quite well laid out, and if your research gets you into Cornwall you may want to read about the background to Cornish surnames first http://www.haxby-york.co.uk/index.html If you bypass what I think is a pretty horrendous design job and readjust your eyes you will see that this website for Haxby in Yorkshire is a fantastic one place study absolutely crammed full of information. From census transcriptions to memories of ex-pats from Haxby there is no doubt a lot of information has been put together to form this site. I really enjoyed browsing through it and it contains a lot of information that make it a must for anyone with connections to the area. If only the design was clearer it would be the most superb site http://www.rowleyregis.com/ Website of Rowley Regis in Staffordshire, or the Black Country, depending on how familiar you are with that term! This is a nice website, weld designed and very pleasing on the eye. Most of the information is modern, which could give you a flavour of the place today, but there is historical information too. Not least is full information from the 1881 census, with a fantastic search mechanism (surname only though). You can either search or browse the census which comes our very nice on the site. There is also a bit of historical information, and personal reminisces. Also important is the surnames interest registry, so you can see if others are also researching your family. A nice site CERTIFICATES BIRTH COLE, William, son of William and Sarah, 11 Oct 1843, Marylebone, MDX COLE, William Charles, son of Charles and Mary Anne, 15 Nov 1843, Regents Park, MDX COLE, William son of Robert & Eliza, 21 Dec 1843, Hoxton, MDX COLE, William, son of Julius & Francis, 11 Feb 1844, Islington, MDX COLE, William, son of William & Hannah, 23 Jan 1844, Brompton, MDX KINGSWELL, Dorothy Rose, dau of Tom & Rose, 29 Mar 1903, Lymington* If this is of use to you in your own personal research, drop me a line At gfhn@thompson04.wanadoo.co.uk and I will put you in touch with the current holder Meanwhile, if you have a certificate you don't need that may be of use to someone else then drop me a line, and we will advertise it in an upcoming newsletter . If you have a spare certificate that is of no use to you at all then you can either send me the details via email, or send me the certificate. If the certificate is sent to me then it will be sent on to any enquiries. After six months if nobody has claimed the certificates as interesting to their research then they will be deposited at the SoG library. I will however keep all the details of the certificate on file and where possible pass them on to any relevant one name studies registered with the Guild of One Name Studies. We only publish certificates more than 100 years old, but pass all certificates on. The address for spare certificates to be sent to is: Rob Thompson, GFHN, 15 Honor Link, Chelmsford, CM1 6BB READERS QUERIES I'm looking for connections to LEVI COMER born in 1857 in South Kealton? Yorkshire. He married Ann born in 1856 from Tressham, Gloucester. They produced Ida Ann, my Grandmother in 1881 in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire and John Hubert in 1893. Died in WW1. They lived in Middlesbrough and Levi appeared to be a Coal Merchant. Any information or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Colin Whitfield colin@colinwh.freeserve.co.uk My g.grandfather apparently emigrated from Cornwall in the late 1800's to America. He subsequently went onto S Africa, where he lived the rest of his life. This is where my grandfather was born and he returned to the UK. My query is, how do I find my g.grandfather's passage to the USA? I found an Ellis Island entry which could be him, but there is no mention of a wife on board the ship. I believe wives were a "non-entity" in those days. Does this mean she would not be listed? It could be that they did not marry before leaving, but I have not found her under her maiden name either. Any suggestions please? I also found an "intention to naturalise" in the USA entry which looks like it might be my man. nickimerrifield@beeb.net To get a query published you must: Make it less than 200 words in length Include your name & email address for direct response from subscribers Send it to gfhn@thompson04.wanadoo.co.uk making the email title “reader query” Be a subscriber to the newsletter To Respond: Please respond directly to the reader, replies sent to me will be forward, but by nature they will be received much later All we ask in return for a free entry is that the person submitting tells us if it has been successful and gives us a brief summary of the responses – this will allow others interested to learn as well Please help out other readers when you can! Information sharing is one of the best aspects of Family History, and kindness will often be returned. Above all Information sharing is the reason this newsletter exists!
