The area of interest is Carpentaria Downs "on the Einasleigh" River, just SW of Ingham on the edge of the Gregory Range. The main towns around about are Normanton, Croydon, Georgetown and Einasleigh. These were old gold, copper and tin mining areas in the 1880's but after the bulk of the prospecting population moved on, some stayed on to work the various station properties in the district or ran servicing businesses.
