Hi everyone! I am looking for Thomas (Tom) Hill and any descendants. Tom Hill and his brother George William, came out from Wigsthorpe, Northampton, England and after working on the Queensland railways, they went to Ewan, Queensland. During 1919, two prospectors named Jack Mulhall and Alex Lane discovered a very rich tin show on Oakey Creek, about 4 and a half miles from the Ewan township in Queensland. They named the show the "Sardine". John Lennox was the general manager of the Sardine and Kangaroo Hills Mining Syndicate (K.H.M.S.) Battery. With the Sardine Mine later under the management of Joe Pryor, the battery was controlled by Tom Hill and the Canary was under the eye of Dudley Geary with Denny Donovan as mine boss. I have also heard the following story: Ernie Kruger's first ride in a motor car (Model T Ford) was from the Burdekin River to Ewan, a distance of 6 miles. Jack Kruger who was employed by the Kangaroo Hills Mining Syndicate of which John Lennox was General Manager drove Lennox to Hillgrove Station just before Christmas, 1922. Tom Hill, Battery Manager went along for company. When they reached the Burdekin on the return trip they had to leave the car and swim the river and walk to Ewan. The Model T Ford car sat on the far bank of the Burdekin for some three weeks before the water level was low enough for the car to cross. In late 1929, the Sardine mine no longer was a viable proposition and the company ceased operations. Would anyone be connected to this Tom Hill and his family or have any information that may be of some assistance? Cheers, Deb [email protected]
