Hi all This is a reminder that I have continued transcribing (maybe the word is copied as I include the web site that only holds them for 7 days) and posting to several different Qld list (never duplicating) as I know that rootsweb has archieved them, and then when needed, I can search their archieves. If you open the following pages, at the bottom of any page is the browse and search links - search is best if looking for a name, whilst browse lets you look through them all. NQ list - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS/AUS-NQ.html Qld list - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS/AUS-QLD.html Toowoomba - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS/AUS-QLD-TOOWOOMBA.html Warwick - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS/AUS-QLD-WARWICK.html Ipswich - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS/AUS-QLD-IPSWICH.html And when time permits, I also scan and post from the local weekly paper - The Gatton Star - From 1999 - Jan 2003 - I have not had much time this year so I am a little behind. I hold paper copies of these newspapers, but as I scan, I only keep the classified page. Gatton - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS/AUS-QLD-GATTON.html Check out the list rootsweb now have for Australia - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS/ Hope this helps some and thank you for the encouragement to continue. I am working on a project that involves looking into the role of kinship and family structure on the success of individual pastoral families, focusing on the Dalrymple Shire. We propose to match data on births, deaths and marriages to leaseholder date for the approximate period 1862-1930. We have sourced leaseholder data from the Qld Government's historical Treasury Notes. However, data on family trees is a little more troublesome. With the help of the family history association of Townsville I have had a good start with putting together some information on individual families. However, there are still alot of missing pieces. To start with, the families I am trying to create a family tree structure for are:- - Firth - Anning - Hann - Atkinson - Cunningham - Clarke I would appreciate any help! Hi, I don't know how many cemeteries there are in Cairns but I was wondering if there are any on line that can be searched. Thanks for the help, Gloria.
Hi Carolyn. I checked the National Library catalogue and they have the publication date as 193- as does the Qld State Library. James Cook Uni. has the date as 1938?. This means that they have no idea either. However, Colonel Sir Leslie Orme Wilson was governor of Qld between 12 June 1932 & 23 April 1946, so that would suggest that the pub. date could have been later and early WWII is a possibility. The Townsville library has a publication with a similar title, but different subtitle which was published in 1933, possibly an earlier edition. I'd say you could use a best guess and make it ca1940 and be quite close, however I will be working in the Local History section of the Tve Knowledge Ctre either on Friday or Monday, so will try to find dates for AHW Cunningham and TL Heatley then and let you know. Please let me know if you have a definitive answer earlier. cheers, Jenny Cornelder ----- Original Message ----- From: "carolyn campbell" <carolyn244c@yahoo.com.au> To: <AUS-NQ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 12, 2004 4:07 PM Subject: Townsville Queen City of North Queensland The FHANQ library has recently received a donation from the Gympie FHS of an old book about Townsville, and as there is no publication date in the book, I am appealing for help. Hello Annette, I can well understand your frustration - I'm still looking for the time and place of death of my grandfather, sometime between 1930 and 1970, anywhere in the world. You could look at the marriage and death certificates of his children. If they had known of a death, he could appear as "Deceased", which might narrow down a time frame. A search of Electoral Rolls might also find him, if he didn't change his name. I'm not sure about this, but he may have been young enough (at 45?) to have been accepted for service during WWI. Also, various post office records have survived throughout Australia, but it might cost a bit to locate and search them. You could also search for Wills (Ecclesiasticals?), Intestacies and inquest documents - not always something sinister there, if someone's burning porridge had set the kitchen alight, an investigation was held, even if no-one died or was hurt. If Sydney had brothers and sisters in the UK, you might try looking for descendants of theirs, and asking if they ever heard any stories about the family that came to Australia. Did you check UK records for his death? He may have returned there. Best of luck to you. Hi everyone, My Great-Great Grandfather was Sidney THICK. he was born 1870 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire England. On 22/11/1889 he married Catherine Charlotte CUTLER in Salisbury, Wiltshire and soon after they set sail for Australia. They arrived in Townsville on the "Quetta" on 29th Jan 1890. Theirs was a free passage and they were engaged by Mr A Dean, Mt Louisa (Townsville). They had the following children (all born Charters Towers): 1. Sarah Charlotte Louisa THICK b 22/9/1890. 2. Annie Isidore THICK b 2/7/1892. 3. Gretta Emma Jane THICK b 22/4/1894. 4. Agnes Rose THICK b 9/2/1896. 5. Gertrude Maude THICK b 29/8/1897. Soon after the birth of their last child, Sidney left the family never to be heard of again. Catherine died 20/7/1922 in Townsville of Cancer & Mania after also having tried suicide several times. I have never been able to find what became of Sidney THICK. I have searched every BDM, many different books, microfiche and every internet site and search engine possible, but all to no avail. No family members know what happened to him. Any tips for where I can go from here? Annette, Townsville.
Dear Jenelle I have had a good day with finding out information. I discovered that William and Emma Sutherland's daughter Charlotte Mary married Leslie Colthurst CATO in 1917. From the Transmissions of Real Estate by death up to 1959 I discovered that Charlotte (of Mareeba) was the recipient of land from both parents. From the Qld Electoral rolls I found that Charlotte and Leslie lived in Mareeba (Sutherland St and Constance St) but were missing from the rolls in 1973. Leslie had been in the 1972 roll but not Charlotte. I could not find any other CATO people living in the area, who might be grown up children. So I am not sure if they had children. However the best find was William's obituary in the Cairns Post, that was also repeated in the Northern Herald. Here is the text. The Late Mr. Sutherland The passing away of Mr. W. M. Sutherland, of Mareeba, removes from our midst one of the oldest pioneers of North Queensland. Arriving in this country about 1863 he took up mining as offering the best inducement for a young and vigorous man, and tested his luck on many northern fields. He was for some considerable time on Gympie and amongst the first arrivals on the Palmer goldfield. Of more local interest is the fact that he was one of a party of four who were the first to land on the beach in Cairns before Cairns was thought of. Representing a southern timber company he came up the coast in a whaleboat looking for cedar country and in the course of the search entered the Johnstone river, Mulgrave, Cairns inlet, Mossman and as far as the Bloomfield river. One of the party was the late Dan Hart, of the Mossman, a Jamaican native who always boasted that he was the "first white man on the Mossman." Subsequently Mr. Sutherland entered the service of the Queensland Government on railway construction under the late Mr Ballard, on the central railway, his knowledge of Queensland timbers being of much value to his Department. After serving some years under the Government he joined Mr MacKenzie, now of Bowen, as a railway contracting firm under the name of MacKenzie and Sutherland, and as such they secured the contract for and built the section of the northern railway, Prairie to Hughenden, following up with the first section of the Bowen railway, and afterwards the third section of the Cairns railway, Myola to Mareeba, which was constructed during the troublesome times of the Bank suspensions in 1893, which troubles the contractors weathered successfully. A dissolution of partnership followed the completion of the contract, and Mr Sutherland afterwards built the Port Douglas-Mossman tramway and many miles of sugar tramway for the Mossman mill to the satisfaction of the different Boards of Directors, afterward retiring to live with his family in Mareeba. He possessed many interests in Cairns, in the future of which town, he was a firm believer. Nearly 40 years ago Mr Sutherland became a member of Comet Lodge, No.1680, E. C., now located at Barcaldine, and always took the keenest interest in the Craft, and this was acknowledged by the bethren of Granite Lodge, 999, S. C., who attended in full regalia at his funeral on Sunday, which was carried out with full Masonic rites. Thanks for your help. Regards Sue
