    1. Captain Elwell
    2. Narelle Catling
    3. I am looking for a Captain Elwell who was a friend of my father's (ARMSTRONG) family in the 1930's in Cairns. He was apparently a retired British serviceman who chose to live in Australia after the end of WWI. He used to visit my father and his siblings and recite poetry and teach them elocution for fun. He was said to have lived at Applethorpe and was also good friends of the Atkinson family of Gunnawarra Station and the Clarke family (Dawn and Laurel) of Cairns. I have had no success finding any trace of him using the above information. I would like to hear from anyone who may know of him or the families he associated with. He was apparently a good writer and was writing a story about the Atkinson's which he would read to my father's family when he had a new chapter. I also suspect he wrote most of the poems he taught the children as I cannot find authors for them. He played a big part in my father and sibling's childhood. They all have good memories of him and some can still recite poems he taught them way back then. Many thanks Narelle

    1. Nth Qld list.....not identified in Subject. Why?
    2. Di Randell
    3. Hello John Can you tell me why Nth. Qld. list is not prefaced, in the subject by some identification? I sent a message, subject line: St. Lawrence Cemetery, Broadsound Story" that I had some photos of the cemetery and would scan then for anyone interested. Now, anyone, getting an email from me.....(unknown to them) with that subject line, would lust delete it. Do we have to identify ourselves in the subject line that it is a matter relating to North Queensland,?

    1. St Lawrence Cemetery, Broadsound Shire
    2. Di Randell
    3. I have a general photo I took Jan/Feb this year of St. Lawrence Cemetery, Qld. in the Broadsound Shire. It's a very pretty, unusual cemetery. It's very well kept and there is no evidence of vandalism. If anyone would like me to scan the photo and send it to you off list, I'd be happy to do so. While there, I purchased a book from the local Council called "The Broad Story" by Frank Rolleston. It has no index so I can't offer to do any lookups but I'm sure if you purchased the book and your ancestors came from there, they would surely get a mention. It is quite inexpensive. A 4 - 206 pages. Hard cover St. Lawrence is a very small place so writing to the Council at St. Lawrence would find them. If any of your ancestors buried there are: Hatfield Hawkins Randell Greedy Payne you had better write to me! They are all my husband's ancestors, and although I have a lot of them, I have not yet put them in my data base. Di R.

While there is a strong element of truth in this image, the reality of course was much more complex. Being an island, it was inevitable that Ireland should develop a strong coastal community whose lives revolved around the sea and whose occupations were more related to shipping, fishing, transport and trade than to the land. In this week's newsletter we introduce 'Shipping and Coastal Directory 1823-1910 (Southeast)' which has just been published on Otherdays.com. Our Book Review section introduces the most significant work on the Tithe Books (Longford) yet to reach genealogical shelves and which is likely to remain the standard work on that most valuable of Irish sources for many years to come. Talk to you soon! Francis. 1. re James Hunter, the inn, Mr savage and cooktown
    2. GLEN HALL
    3. Dear Janet Regarding your James Hunter... I have ascertained he was the licencee of the Live and Let Live Inn in 1884 and probably till 1886..... I have a website on the hotels of mackay at http://www.geocities.com/ghh_mackay/hotels/hotels_sources.html if you wish to find further info....never heard of a man named Savage but..... Coincidentally I have two original cedar windows from the Live and Let Live inn in my old mill house at Pleystowe when i did some renovation in 1993. My wife and I applied to buy the old Inn in 1991 in Walkerston but were knocked back by the Building Society as the building was too old even though we had a builder check it out and it was found structurally sound just in need of TLC.....Anyway an old couple bought it and stripped it and demolished the old detached kitchen and put in modern windows and new weatherboards and were in the process taking it all to the dump when i went past one day and stopped and asked if they wouldnt mind letting me have the timber and windows which they did..... The inn was demolished in 2001 sadly without any forewarning and would have been the oldest building in Walkerston at the time having been built in about 1876. Anyway if you would be happy to share any information on Mr Hunter for our Society records that would be greatly appreciated.... Regarding any newspapers from Cooktown refer to the James Cook University Website http://www.library.jcu.edu.au/Specials/Nqnewspapers/place.shtml I dont know if they have all copies in their microfilm collection but i have used their microfilm in Townsville over the years and it is a wonderful resource...The are quite a few cooktown papers listed Cheers from Glen Hall Research Officer Mackay Historical Society and Museum Inc. Po Box 1349, MACKAY QLD 4740. email: bushpig3@bigpond.com our website: http://www.geocities.com/mackaymuseum/index.html __________________________________________________________________ X-Message: #5 Date: Sat, 22 May 2004 16:26:54 +1000 From: "Janet Stevenson" <janetimstevenson@hotmail.com> To: AUS-QLD-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <BAY1-DAV63vHjXZE9TJ0001a3d7@hotmail.com> Subject: re Hunter and Savage Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Is there anybody on the list who is researching the name Savage please? I am trying to collect information on James Hunter and have found that he was registered as the Publican of Travellers Rest Cooktown and Live and Let Live at Walkerston during the period 1843-1900. He was associated, apparently, with a gentleman named Savage in one of those ventures. James Hunter died in 1910 without marrying or producing children, so it is very difficult to establish information on a man who seems to have lived all of his life in Cooktown, having migrated from Scotland in about 1863, if I have done the mathematics properly from the information provided on his death certificate. Can anyone help please? Also was there a newspaper published in Cooktown in the second half of the nineteenth century please? TIA Janet in Sydney ______________________________
