NZ CD Dear Researchers, We have just completed the following book, Wise's New Zealand Post Office Directory for 1926 The Wise's Post Office Directories were published by Henry Wise with the first edition published about 1873. These large volumes were the first national postal directories. The 1926 volume consists of 2670 pp, and contain a New Zealand towns directory, which lists all of the householders, the streets they lived on, and in most cases the occupations of the head of the household. The volume we have scanned was an ex-library copy and is in two volumes. The first volume the text is faded in places, and the second volume, the pages are browned, both factors making it hard to get quality images. And in the government section of the second volume a few pages have been replaced with very faded photocopies. This volume is searchable. $25 plus $5 p& p I have put some sample pages on the News page of www.colonialcdbooks.com For this months special a free copy of Wise's New Zealand Index is included with the Wise's Post Office Directory. The Index has been made searchable, making it even easier to find those out of the way places. New CD Duplicator If you have been ordering CD books for a while, you may notice that they have started to look a bit different lately. A couple of weeks ago a cd duplicator arrived from the United States. It's a clever little machine that works by robotics and burns and prints the cd's all by itself. All the best with your research. NZ - New Zealand Cemeteries Database Launched The following article was posted to the daily edition of Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter on October 8, 2004. The following is a press release from the Christchurch City Council: Genealogists received an early present for the Carter Group Heritage Week with the recent launch of the Christchurch City Council cemeteries database at Christchurch City Libraries. The Heritage Week theme this year of People, Places and Pursuits, aligns well with the new cemeteries database. Instead of hours spent looking through endless microfilms of transcripts of hand-written interment registers, people can now use the cemeteries database through any Council library computer. You simply enter a surname to find out immediately where people of that name are buried across all Council cemeteries. Information starting from the first plots of some of the city’s oldest cemeteries, long since closed, are recorded. This includes Addington and Sydenham cemeteries. Interments at Addington, Avonhead Park, Belfast, Bromley, Linwood, Memorial Park, Ruru Lawn, Sydenham, Waimairi, Woolston, and Yaldhurst cemeteries are part of the database. Information technology librarian Paul Sutherland says the database is updated fortnightly so it includes the names of people that may have died two weeks ago. The Council has made the database available through Christchurch City Libraries because Council staff were fielding increasing numbers of genealogy requests, when it was not their core business, Mr Sutherland says. During the next few years, the Christchurch City Council will eventually make the information available on the internet. For now, however, people can only access the site by visiting City Libraries. Inquiries from outside the region will have to be made through library staff, which is free for the first 15 minutes after which, a research fee will apply. This is the case for any research inquiry, Mr Sutherland says. NZ CBY The Christchurch Regional Office of Archives New Zealand is pleased to announce the launch of its new virtual exhibition centre, called simply 'Christchurch Online'. It is available from http://www.archives.govt.nz/exhibitions/currentexhibitions/chch/index.html, and currently hosts two exhibitions. The first, called Past Caring, has been designed to showcase some of the types of records held in Christchurch, and to provide a taste of the different themes, topics and concepts covered in our holdings. The second exhibition coincides with the Carter Group Heritage Week programme, and illustrates some of the issues that early settlers faced in establishing the basic rudiments of a colonial life, and town, from scratch. We hope to be able to develop other exhibitions on other themes over time. To assist us with this, we would appreciate any feedback visitors provide; simply follow the link at the bottom of each page and complete the form.
