I'm new to list so hullo to all. My interest is - CORKERY Mortimer aka Murty, b c1851, Cork, Co Cork, IRL arrived Sydney Feb 1876 went to Gulgong NSW to brother Patrick already here both goldminers family legend says Murty went to Palmer River goldfield - no other details possibly accompanied by brother - CORKERY Timothy, b c1853, Cork, Co Cork, IRL Arrived with brother Mortimer not sure if he went to Palmer River also Parents of all 3 brothers were - CORKERY Timothy and Mary still living in Cork, Co Cork, IRL when Mortimer and Timothy emigrated. I would be wildly excited if anyone was doing research in this family and we were connected. If not, can anyone give me an idea of where to start tracing Mortimer and/or Timothy Palmer River. I've read a bit of the history of the goldmining there. Looks as if they would not have been there long as they arrived 1876, went to Gulgong, then to Qld so probably late 1870s. They could have moved on or died there. Any help would be appreciated. I'm in central NSW small town so no access to libraries etc. TIA, Alice

Hello Jill It looks like I missed email about Dunwich cemetery .. dash. I have a great grandmother Lillias BELL d 20 Sep 1899 who was buried there. So far I haven't been able to find any information online, or in our FHANQ Townsville library to establish her grave site or if there is any memorial. It is probable that she was in the Benevolent Instituation but again I haven't been able to source admission registers. Can you or anyone else give me some advice on where to search, please? I hope there is something of interest to you in this weeks news. Remember its your local news & views that get put here, so keep news from your society or group coming in! Tomorrow I am off for a conference, travelling again, and will be away for a week so there will be a gap next week. In the meantime NEW BOOKS AND CDs From Phillimores loatest catalogue I notice they have recently published the following books: Palaeography for Family and Local Historians, Hilary Marshall. £17.99 Hilary has been running courses on this subject for a good number of years, one of which I was lucky enough to sit in on. This will be a an excellent book on a difficult subject Gathering the Clans: Tracing Scottish Ancestry on the Internet, Alan Stewart, £9.99 Well Heeled: The remarkable story of the Public Benefit Boot Company, Brian Seddon and David L Bean, £17.99 See More at: http://www.phillimore.co.uk/ NEW RELEASES FROM ARCHIVE CD BOOKS The History of Scarborough The history of Scarborough from the earliest date, written by Joeseph Baker, was published in 1882 with many illustrations and maps. It contains much valuable historic information in relation to the habits, customs and peculiarities of past generations of Scarborough Thrilling Experiences in the War in South Africa - 1900 A terrific book for anyone wanting to get the flavour and background of the Boer war without having to read through a more conventional "history." This book is more like a Tabloid account of the war, relying as much on captioned pictures as it does on the written story Kelly's Directory of Oxfordshire 1939 Huge pull out map of Oxfordshire. These late directories are comprehensive and thoroughly indexed. Chapters include, Race, History, Topography, Biography, Genealogy, Language, Dialect, Surnames and Place names, Antiquities and Folk Lore, Mining, Phenomena, Epitaphs, Curious sign posts, Eccentric characters and Humorous stories. Lancashire & Cheshire Historical and Genealogical Notes Local and family history, abstracts of deeds, charters, wills, folklore, legends, traditions, etc. Available as set of three volumes or singles. Pedigrees Recorded in the Visitations of the County of Durham During the 1500s and 1600s, the Heralds visited each county and recorded the pedigrees of families. In many cases the pedigrees date back to Norman times (the 11th century). These records form an extremely important source of information for family historians. Archive CD Books homepage - http://www.archivecdbooks.com WEBPAGE REVIEWS http://www.londonburials.co.uk/ A truly fantastic web site. This site lists burial grounds in London, and gives information on each one listed. Each entry has maps, and pictures where possible, of the site in the nineteenth century and nowadays. The web site is put together in such a way that it is compulsive, and historical information about the site added to details of famous burials make it an absolute gem. The site is extremely well designed, very fast to download and incredibly informative, this is definitely one of the best web sites I have seen for some time. An absolute boon for local and family historians with an interest in the London area both City and Greater. http://worldzone.net/social/wig/ The web site of the Welsh Interest group of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. A useful little web site, this will have particular interest to those whose Welsh ancestors had migrated overseas. The web site contains information about the Society, and the Welsh Interest Group, but also lists of names from such things as Welsh born immigrants to New South Wales, New Zealand, Clwyd strays, and an awful lot more besides. I did not like the design that much, but the site was easy enough to use. The look of the pages just needed tidying up a little. Otherwise a good little site, and full of useful information. http://www.censusfinder.com/ireland.htm This is an absolutely great web site, the type usually referred to as a portal. In other words there was little actual information on the site, but it contains a vast amount of links to external information. This is one of the best types of portal one that is very specific, but has a good coverage. The site contains links to census information and other lists for Ireland. It would take forever to list them all but there are a lot of them! Some of the stranger ones included lists of Huguenot Regiments, Irish Revenue Commissioners and a 1659 census for names of Amagh. The font is quite small, and not the easiest to read, and I found initially the design a little off putting, but it is definitely worth persevering as there is a lot more here than initially it seems. A great web site, vital for people with Irish ancestors, and I suspect one that will end up on a favourites list. The database, at www.yadvashem.org.il, is partly based on more than two million "pages of testimony" submitted to the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem since 1950 by survivors or family members and friends of Jews killed in the Holocaust. Information was also gleaned from historical documentation, such as correspondence of Nazi officials and lists of inmates at death camps, Yad Vashem said on the Web site. "Building the database is a work in progress," the Web site said, calling the project a final act of respect. "Millions of names that appear in a wide variety of historical documents have not yet been identified or recorded in the database; many additional names still linger only in the memories of survivors or in the lore of their families," it said. After entering a victim's name in English or Hebrew, a paragraph of biographical data - date and place of birth, marital status, residence and if known, date and place of death - appears along with a link to an image of the "page of testimony" submitted to Yad Vashem. Another link next to the victim's name expands the search, enabling visitors to the site to view information about additional family members who perished. http://xtramsn.co.nz/news/0,,3888-3877212,00.html USA MI http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/gendisx/index.htm Genealogical Death Indexing System, Michigan Department of Community Health Archived death records from 1867-1884. Hi everyone, One of my families: Henry NASH, wife Marian and 2 baby daughters Lilian & Maria arrived on the "Scottish Hero" in Rockhampton on 29/11/1884 as Bounty Immigrants. I have found this much from the microfilm # IMM126, but I believe there may be more on A/150 which is the Immigration Agent in Rockhampton film # M1708. Could anyone tell me where this film is held? I am in Townsville. Annette.

I hope there is something here of use to you! An interesting aside I was interested this week to see the BBCs Who do you think you are on Moira Stewart, those of you who saw it will have seen the beautiful isle of Dominica, a pace not visited by many but truly spectacular! But on to the news . NEW BOOKS AND CDs A week or so ago I put in some information on DNA and family history. I recently asked the author to tell me more, and this is what he sent to me: "I wrote DNA AND FAMILY HISTORY to explain to in the simplest way why every male genealogist should be thinking about taking a DNA test. After running my own Y-chromosome surname DNA project for five years, I realised that people wanted an accessible book, one that spared them the intricacies of statistical analysis and genetic science but which made it clear exactly how they will benefit when they pay for a DNA test. To go along with that, I also wanted to lay out a set of practical instructions for those men and women that want to run a DNA testing project, whether as part of a surname-based genealogy study or as a stand alone project in its own right. So whether you're researching on your own or as part of a group, I think my book will help you understand the most from a DNA test result. In addition, to set the context, I explain the story of mankind's migration from Africa 150,000 years ago and how you can find out how you fit into that story. I also explain how the rising number of Y-chromosome DNA results are going to transform our knowledge of how surnames were first formed. You can buy a signed, numbered and dedicated copy direct from me via my website at www.dnaandfamilyhistory.com/shop.shtml. I was browsing through some publishers web site when I came across this one. It is not necessarily the type of web site that I would usually be associated with reviewing but I felt it was well worth a mention. Grimsay Press, based in Scotland specialise in reprinting rare books relating to Social, Local and Family History, and a quick browse through their catalogue is well worthwhile. There is plenty here, and not just on Scotland. OK, so the books are not cheap, but you never know, it may just be the thing you are looking for! http://www.ixengineercommand.com/index.php A nice website revolving around the history, and men of the IX Engineer Command in World War 2. The unit was responsible for building, maintaining and defending airfields in France, and the fascinating history of the command, or at least part of it, is online on this web site. The site contains an overview, some photographs, an explanation of the nits, and the history and a list of men in the command. It is quite a small web site but still a fascinating one, and one well worth visiting. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~puxty/ A great little site concentrating on the records of Coastguards on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. As the compiler rightly quotes on the index page, coastguards were often difficult to find, moving around and the nature of the job means they could me many miles, if not hundreds of miles from home. This site records the entries of coastguards in the 1841 through to 1891 censuses, with full transcription including their families. A basic site, but one that is easy to browse, and well worth looking through. Evan Thomas Jones. b.1840 @ Bermondsey ? London. & later married to Ann Moore. b.1842. London It is understood that my Great. Great- Grandfather was named Edward Jones, but cannot find any details that relate to his family, any details or possible leads that would help me trace any of my family would be most appreciated. I am quite new to Genealogy so anything that may point me in the correct direction will be invaluable. Sidney Jones. scjones.karadaw@virgin.net Hi. As someone who was adopted, as a baby, in1943 I am belatedly beginning a research project into my family's history. From the 1901 census and my mother's birth certificate I discovered three unusual middle personal names. They are so unusual that I feel it may be possible that anyone bearing them today - or who knows of a family member who bore them - might be a relative. My mother's maiden name was Gladys LLOYDALL Harrison ( later Thompson). She was born at 109 Bridge Street, Derby in 1903. Her father (my grandfather) was named John OLDKNOW Harrison. Staying with him at the time of the 1901 census was his nephew from London, named Arthur VATMAN Bull. I have tried - without success - to trace the meaning, even the very existence, of the name Lloydall, and am about to start to try to find information about 'Oldknow' and 'Vatman' so any help would be greatly appreciated. My name is Margaret Burke, and my email address is emandmob@fsmail.net As a point of interest I am trying to find information on a family named Wilkerson said to be from Norfolk. James Wilkerson, then aged about 18yrs, emigrated by himself from Norfolk to Western Australia in or about the year 1848. In Western Australia he commenced work as a farmhand for a wealthy English emigrant named Dr Viveash. He eventually became farm Manager for Dr Viveash, married a local girl, bought his own farm, prospered & died a reasonably prosperous farmer. His decendants still work the farm he developed. Are there any more Wilkersons still living in Norfolk who may have some connection with James ?
