Pedigrees Recorded in the Visitations of the County of Durham During the 1500s and 1600s, the Heralds visited each county and recorded the pedigrees of families. In many cases the pedigrees date back to Norman times (the 11th century). These records form an extremely important source of information for family historians. Archive CD Books homepage - http://www.archivecdbooks.com WEBPAGE REVIEWS http://www.londonburials.co.uk/ A truly fantastic web site. This site lists burial grounds in London, and gives information on each one listed. Each entry has maps, and pictures where possible, of the site in the nineteenth century and nowadays. The web site is put together in such a way that it is compulsive, and historical information about the site added to details of famous burials make it an absolute gem. The site is extremely well designed, very fast to download and incredibly informative, this is definitely one of the best web sites I have seen for some time. An absolute boon for local and family historians with an interest in the London area both City and Greater. http://worldzone.net/social/wig/ The web site of the Welsh Interest group of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. A useful little web site, this will have particular interest to those whose Welsh ancestors had migrated overseas. The web site contains information about the Society, and the Welsh Interest Group, but also lists of names from such things as Welsh born immigrants to New South Wales, New Zealand, Clwyd strays, and an awful lot more besides. I did not like the design that much, but the site was easy enough to use. The look of the pages just needed tidying up a little. Otherwise a good little site, and full of useful information. Well Folks, It's coming up to the festive season and a number of us will be going on leave. Already I am receiving advice that mailboxes are "Over Quota" and therefore I am getting unwanted advice that the email has bounced as the mailbox is full. Also any regular supplier of emails to the list will get a computer generated message that their emails are creating a large number of bounced mail and their membership maybe cancelled. Please note this is computer generated. If you are going to be away for a period of time, could I suggest that you unsubscribe until you get back. If I receive three messages to this effect, "Over Quota", I will unsubscribe you. I will happily resubscribe you when you return from leave. Regards and all the best for the festive season. Received from Heather Oldham [moldham@bigpond.net.au] Hi Everyone Does any one have a William (Bill) Matthews who lived in Charters Towers during the second world war. He was a cook/chef at a pub in Charters Towers. Bill died in 1953 in Townsville. He had a son Leonard James Matthews born about 1930 (died 1978). I grew up knowing him as Uncle Michael. A nickname from Mick from the army (I think). (He married my Aunty Isabel) I am looking for more info on his family. eg: His wife's name (apparently died in 1930's), did he have other children, did he have brothers and sisters, what were his parent's names. Thanks Kind regards Heather
nzsghamilton newsUsed with permission. ********************* nzsghamilton news No 50 12th December 2004 A BOOK Some time ago Patricia Roberts-Pichette spoke to our Hamilton members. Patricia phoned Elizabeth Heaphy the other night to say her new book is out and she is staying at St Andrews until end January. "Not a Pioneer!" edited and annotated by Patricia R. Roberts. Published in 2004 by Deed Printing, Waiuku. Copies at a cost of $40 plus postage and packaging, are available from 25 St Andrews Terrace, Hamilton. "This is the story of Bernice Monrath (Alexander) Johnstone, born January 8 1871, in Howick, of an English father and a Danish mother. A lively story teller, Bernice wrote continuously from the 1920s almost to her death in 1960. Although she was describing her family, her childhood, her schooling, her days as a teacher and her later life, much of what she wrote is a social history of her times, detailing the lives of farmers and their families and how their lives changed through the years. Her life, though happy and carefree in youth, had its full share of hard work and tragedy. Bernice grew up in Mangapiko, halfway between Te Awamutu and Pirongia (then Alexandra). After her marriage, she lived first in Raglan, then at the top of the Old Mountain Road to Raglan and finally between Whatawhata and Karamu at "Three Oaks", her home on the Waipa River. Most of the text is Bernice's own, except for bridges and lead-ins edited or added to make a logical flow to the story. The text boxes, footnotes, family photographs and documents were added to illustrate and provide context to the events that Bernice described. An all-name index has been included." AUS TAS LAUNCESTON TRANSCRIPTIONS 1800S are 2 volumes of transcriptions, both of which relate to early Launceston in the 1800s. The first transcription is of GEORGE FULLER's "RECOLLECTIONS OF LAUNCESTON 1836 - 1847" & related unpublished works held is a hand-written unpublished work, written between 1894 & 1897, held in the Mitchell Library, Sydney. 115 pages in the original, the Recollections comprise his notes on Old Launceston, giving a street-by-street description of the town, its buildings and their occupants, together with his personal recollections and stories of the town and its residents in the years 1836 to 1847 - including his version of the "Whale in the Cataract" story. These notes also include a collection of his letters dated 1897, to Ernest Whitfeld of Launceston, as well as other historical submissions collected by Mr Whitfeld, as material for public lectures he gave on Old Launceston in the late 1890s. INDEXED The second transcription is of Ernest Whitfeld's series of articles on "Early Launceston" published in the Launceston Examiner in 1897. Whitfeld's public lectures covered many aspect of early life in Tasmania (VDL) from first settlement in 1803 up to 1897 - early settlement, the aboriginals, growth of the town, local stories, cultural activities, currency and tokens, the legal system and punishment, and the impact of events on the mainland, such as the gold rushes. INDEXED George Fuller's "Recollections" costs $20 including postage within Australia, and the Early Launceston articles cost $15 including postage within Australia. If you are interested in buying both at same time, so they can be mailed together, the cost is $30 for the two, postage included.
