Hi Deborah Searched the QLD Electoral Roll for 1900, but no result. I did find a William Fisher resident in Emu Creek 1884 if that is any help. Have you your grandfather's marriage certificate? It would show occupation. This extract is from "Pioneers' Country" by Glenville Pike. "In Dec 1897 the QLD Govt. gave the Chillagoe Co. approval to construct the railway...the Co rushed ahead to erect smelters and develop its leases but spent too little time and money on prospecting and testing. The report that half a million tons of ore estimated to yield 17,000 tons of copper, 1500 tons of lead and a million ounces of silver lay waiting, caused a boom on the Southern stock exchanges and a rush of men and their families to Chillagoe. Within a matter of months there was a bustling township among the craggy limestone bluffs on the bank of the permanately flowing Station Creek....The railway was completed in 1901" Hope this helps, Judy - for Cairns Historical Society.. > My grandfather was married in Chillagoe in 1908, under the name of George > Cunningham FISHER, aged 25. He was there until possibly 1913. > > I would like to know what archives may exist for Chillagoe this period to > help find out what brought him there from Ballarat. "-
Hi Ken, today I looked up the PO Directories for Thursday Island and found the following entry: Mrs F.W. Dredge, Picture Show Proprietor. First entry was in 1920-21 and the last entry for her was 1930-31 I searched our photo collection to see if there was a photo of the theatre (if any) but did not find any - also looked up a history of Thursday Island, but found no record there. We have come to the conclusion that Mrs Dredge may have conducted her "pictures" in a hall such as the Victoria Memorial Institute Hall (the Town Hall) Douglas Street, erected in 1901. You might like to know that all residents of Thursday Island were ordered complete and immediate evacuation of the Island in WW 2 - on 28 January 1942. They were given one days notice and could only take what they could carry. They all embarked on the liners Zealandia and Ormiston for destinations in southern centers as far as Brisbane. Armed forces personnel occupied the hastily vacated homes. Hope this helps, Judy - for Cairns Historical Society. > > We are seeking any leads for info on Thursday Island residents named > Dredge. > My grandfather Graham Dredge went missing in Western Australia in 1910 > after periods of employment at Broome with a pearling company, as an > accountant. > We are tracking the family links and have learned of a family named > Dredge which resided on Thursday Island, with four sons who were in > World War II. > Any knowledge or leads will be appreciated.

HI Joyce, everyone. I have put a site together of the bush graves around Irvinebank and hope to add other cemeteries and graves found throughout the Far North. Kurilda is a bit far out of our range but if anyone is willing to contribute to the web site they would be most welcome. I would also be willing to help out if anyone wants to put a page or two together from around their own area of interest. I think that the headstones were meant to be seen and read but the people, towns and roads have disappeared over the years so putting them up on the net makes them accessible again to the descendents and others who are interested. The pages can be found at http://www.geocities.com/scribble67/graves anybody else got an opinion on this? -----Original Message----- From: Helen Lucas [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, 14 August 2000 10:48 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Lone Grave Hi Joyce I just wanted to suggest that the date on the headstone could not be correct. Hi Judy, Was it you who I emailed in late February, early March, and you were away, to return to CAIRNS at a later date - Phillip MURPHY of CAIRNS. My email program crashed after that and I lost messages, addresses etc., so that is why I did not make any contact through the Cairns Historical Society. Best Wishes phillip MURPHY
Many thanks to all the replies about my grandfather (Fisher) in Chillagoe. I look forward to hearing what the Historical Society may hold and I wish I could get back to the Queensland archives to check the electoral rolls. I spent a wonderful day there recently when I made a rare visit to Brisbane. Deborah C in central Victoria.

Dear Deborah, My ancestors were also from Ballarat area, specifically, Buninyong. They ended up in Herberton 1880s and then Chilligoe around 1900. Stephen LEWIS and his son John Walter LEWIS and his wife, Grace. Stephen was involved with gold mining in Ballarat area and there are mines in Chilligoe. Maybe this is the answer. Best wishes, Judy Jones. At 12:56 13/08/00 +1000, you wrote: >My grandfather was married in Chillagoe in 1908, under the name of George >Cunningham FISHER, aged 25. It should have gone direct to Steve, but I was caught by this list defaulting replies to the list. So, I've sent this apology to the list when I reply to Steve. Not surprising about this. I'm watching all these people ask about people around Warwick. None of them are related to my wife's lines from that area. Just one of those things. -- Terry Collins {:-)}}} Ph(02) 4627 2186 Fax(02) 4628 7861 email: [email protected] www: http://www.woa.com.au or [email protected] WOA Computer Services <lan/wan, linux/unix, novell> snail: PO Box 1047, Campbelltown, NSW 2560. Deborah, My ancestors started out in Sth Aust in 1848, were involved in the Eureka Stockade, went to the Canoona goldfields in the 1860s, then worked their way up to Ravenswood, Charters Towers etc. Here they changed from seeking gold to squatting then owning pubs and died in Townsville on Xmas Day 1900. So the story behind your people could be anything? Ian, Port Macquarie Download NeoPlanet at http://www.neoplanet.com
Hi Deborah I am going to the Historical Society, Cairns, tomorrow. Will check info for you Judy Research Officer. > > My grandfather was married in Chillagoe in 1908, under the name of George > Cunningham FISHER, aged 25. We are seeking any leads for info on Thursday Island residents named Dredge. My grandfather Graham Dredge went missing in Western Australia in 1910 after periods of employment at Broome with a pearling company, as an accountant. We are tracking the family links and have learned of a family named Dredge which resided on Thursday Island, with four sons who were in World War II. Any knowledge or leads will be appreciated. Ken and Margot Dredge

My grandfather was married in Chillagoe in 1908, under the name of George Cunningham FISHER, aged 25. He was there until possibly 1913. I would like to know what archives may exist for Chillagoe this period to help find out what brought him there from Ballarat. Deborah C in country Victoria.
Dear All, I have just learned that my Greatuncle Ivor MUSKER died in the Eventide Home in Charters Towers in 1952. I note from International White Papers that there is an Eventide Home Shop in the town. Could somebody who knows the place please tell me whether this is perhaps a charity shop and, if so, is the Eventide Home still operating? A guess, but is it run by the Salvation Army? I'd be grateful for any assistance. Cheers Annette of Wales
Hi Everyone! I am looking for anyone connected to or who know something about George William Hill and Thomas (Tom) Hill, sons of Joseph Hill and Catherine Dudley. George William Hill was born on 12 July 1869 and Thomas in ? 1872 - both were born in Wigsthorpe, Northampton, England. George William Hill and his brother Tom, came out from England and after working on the Queensland railways, George and Tom went to Ewan, Queensland. George William Hill married Alice Dayes on 16 December 1915 in Townsville, Queensland. Together they had four children - George, William (Bill), Sarah and Fred (our grandfather) Hill. George William Hill was an expert rifle shot and trained two of his sons, Bill and George, to use firearms. These three became kangaroo shooters for a number of years ane were widely known for their skill. George William Hill was also a Tin Miner. George William Hill died in Townsville on 29 August 1951. Tom Hill (George William's brother) was a conroller at the Sardine and Kangaroo Hills Mining Syndicate (K.H.M.S.) Battery close to Oakey Creek near the township of Ewan, Queensland (outside of Charters Towers). It is understood that Tom married about three times and had about 10 children - George, Joseph, Fred, Emma, Lillie, Thomas, Henry, Nellie, Ivy and Elizabeth Hill.
