Hello, Can anybody help. I'm searching for the family of Alfred John Morris and Sarah Christina Fitzell. marr 1907 Chillagoe. lived Atherton. Also her sister Georgina Fitzell marr John Mitchell 1890 , maybe lived in Townsville. Carolyn Richter
If anyone can help Jan McAlpin, please respond to HER E-mail address below HER signature. I am merely passing on her query. Thank you, Denyse Bonney, Townsville I am trying to find a publication regarding settlement of the Packers Camp area near Edmonton & Gordonvale. My great grandfather (Ernest August HOFFMANN) had a team of horses and took supplies from the coast, up the Gillies Range, to the Atherton Tableland in the 1890s, and my grandfather (Edward O'NEILL) and his family settled in the Gordonvale area. I've gathered quite a bit of genealogical information on both families and intend putting it together as a family history "story" for my daughters, but I would like to be able to describe what life was like back then. Do you know of any publication which might cover the period around 1890 to the early 1900s in that area? Your advice would be appreciated. With thanks, Jan McAlpin Yamba, NSW. [email protected]

For many years I have been searching for information about Anne Jane TOOHEY and John MAHER [CLARK]. This is a long posting, however your time to read through it is much appreciated. If you are able to assisting any way with connections to this family, I would be very grateful. The tragedy concerning Sarah MAHER, daughter of Anne Jane TOOHEY and John MAHER [CLARK], also effected sixteen other children. These children died in Rockhampton in 1886. Sarah Maher along with her older sister Margaret, was transferred from St. Joseph's Orphanage in Mackay to the Meteor Park Orphanage, later known as Neerkol, in Rockhampton on 22nd December 1885. Interesting brief entries from the Meteor Park Orphanage Register for 22nd December 1885 read: "Marara [St. Joseph's] Orphanage was becoming more unhealthy through its position. The children grew more delicate every year so our Bishop, the Right Rev. Dr Cani, built this orphanage to receive them. Fifty-seven of them came here on 22nd December 1885". Sarah Maher was admitted to the Rockhampton Children's Hospital, on 4th May 1886, suffering from pernicious anaemia. This condition was contracted as a result of the poor living conditions endured at St. Joseph's Orphanage in Mackay. Sarah Maher died the day she was admitted to hospital and was buried on Wednesday 5th May 1886, in the Rockhampton Cemetery Roman Catholic section, Row 7, Grave Plot No, 1400. The following is an extract from a report submitted by the Inspector of Orphanages for 1885 in relation to Sarah Maher's death. "The children of the St Joseph's Orphanage, Mackay, had been for some time previous to transfer, suffering from extreme anaemia or poverty of blood, caused by long exposure to malarial poison, and were thus suffering when they landed at Rockhampton, A large number were at once placed on the sick list, Dr McNeely was called in by the Bishop, and the medical officer requested to visit and consult as to treatment". Sixteen children from the Meteor Park Orphanage, who had previously been transferred from St Joseph's Orphanage in Mackay died from ailments associated with their stay at Bucasia during 1886. Effective medical treatment administered to the surviving former St Joseph's inmates in Rockhampton may have prevented further deaths. Only one child died at Meteor Park in 1887. Extracts from the St Joseph's Orphanage Register are as follows: St. Joseph's Orphanage via Mackay [Page 57] Name: MAGHER, Sarah When Born: 1878 Where Born: Port Douglas When Admitted: 1st October 1881 Why Admitted: Destitute - Mother died. Father out of employment. There was a collection made by the Thornborough townspeople to pay their fares to Mackay. Name of Parents: John MAGHER and Annie CLARK Occ. of Parents: Father Digger; Mother Dressmaker; Religion: R.C. Residential: Port Douglas [Page 58] Name: MAGHER, Margaret When Born: 1876. Where Born: Port Douglas When Admitted: 1st October 1881 Why Admitted: Sister to Page 57 The reference in the above listings to Anne Jane Toohey as "Annie Clark" is considered incorrect. The name 'Clark' has been used consistently in the Catholic Church Records as an alias for John Maher. At the time of Anne Jane Toohey's death in 1881, mining prosperity on the Hodgkinson Goldfield was in extreme decline. Her surviving children would have produced an added dilemma for concerned Thornborough residents. It would have been an enormous responsibility for some family to have taken these two girls into their home. The decision by the townspeople to raise the cost of the children's fares to St. Joseph's Orphanage in Mackay was probably the only option. MARGARET MAHER Margaret Maher is listed on Page 7 in the 'Hired Out' register of the Meteor Park Orphanage, and was 'Sent to Service' in July 1888. Her employer was recorded as being John William CARROLL, a Watchmaker of Townsville. Margaret was 12 years of age and commenced her employment with Carroll on 16th July 1888. She was probably engaged in domestic duties to assist Mrs Eugenie Carroll with a family of young children. Employers of an orphans had to meet stringent conditions and reasonable measures in the form of periodic checks were conducted by staff of the Department to ensure that employers were meeting their obligations. Along with providing wages and clothing, employers were obliged to provide care and support, moral and physical, for orphaned children in their service. As well, the children were to attend church services regularly. They received some pocket money out of their wages, but the balance was forwarded to the Department to be banked in a trust fund until the child had reached the age of twenty one years. Up to a maximum of 25% of the child's trust fund could be withdrawn by them prior to their turning twenty-one. Margaret Maher was sent to service in July 1888. No discharge date is indicated for her in the register for the Meteor Park Orphanage. There is no indication in orphanage records of any later employers, or of her returning to Rockhampton from service with the Carroll family later employers, or of her returning to Rockhampton from service with the Carroll family. It is presumed that she remained with the family until her discharge around 1904. Does anyone know what happened to this Margaret MAHER. She may have taken the name CARROLL or married? Any help very much appreciated. For further information please see: http://www.heritagearchaeology.com.au/Tracey_Maher/Tracey_Maher.htm Kind regards. Was somebody looking for this combination lately? Don't know if this is of any use, but my GG'father Owen had a brother John Casey who married Agnes BUCKLEY at St Columbas church in Charters Towers [31/1/1894]. Also recorded at the church are some baptisms for their children. She was born in Ravenswood and her parents were George BUCKLEY, Miner, and Sarah, formerly Dawson. Also have come across a death by accidental burning of Hannah Maria BUCKLEY at the Royal Hotel, Millchester in August, 1892. A last note: Mrs Louisa BUCKLEY was baptised conditionally at St Columbas 20/7/1903. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. This is a monthly email from Loudoun House Museum. Also Published in 'Loud'n Clear' - A monthly newsletter for the community of Irvinebank. There were 150 visitors to Loudoun House in September, showing that the tourist season is winding down as we move into the hotter part of the year. Visitors included a Journalist from the Australian Newspaper, which resulted in an article and National coverage for The Living Museum of Irvinebank. Another group of visitors in September consisted of representatives of key stakeholders in the Queensland Governments Heritage Trail Network: http://heritagetrails.qld.gov.au/fs_fnqld.html. The Heritage Trail Network is the Queensland Government's response to the growing 'Cultural Tourism' market. A meeting at the museum was held to discuss our goals and visions for the Loudoun House Museum Strategic Plan and the Regional Museum Development Officer, Maria Wronska-Friend will be visiting in October to help us to further develop the plan. We also partook in a teleconference with the Museum and Historical Association of North Qld to discuss regional museum issues. I had a week long break and travelled to Cooktown to see the replica 16th Century Dutch Ship, Duyfken: "the original Brave Ship which made the first recorded visit to Australian shores in 1606": www.duyfken.com Museum Director Tony Derksen began a two week trip around Tasmania. The last weekend in September saw us hosting a display at Chillagoe: www.infocus.to/chillagoe where the Inaugural North Queensland Gold Panning Championships were held successfully. It was a great time for catching up with people in another part of John Moffat's Empire. I had the pleasure of visiting the Girofla and Lady Jane Mines, and of course the Chillagoe Smelter which were all originally developed by the enterprise of John Moffat. At Chillagoe I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Ruth Kerr who is planning to launch a new book on John Moffat sometime very soon. All of us here at Loudoun House are looking forward to learning more about one of Australia's greatest entrepeneurs. I will let you all know of the launch date when it is confirmed. Dr Kerrs' books about Irvinebank and John Moffat are available at the Loudoun House Museum Bookstore www.infocus.to/irvinebank/bookstore.html Restoration and maintenance work on Loudoun House included a bath for the outside of the building and repair of the front stairs. Thanks to Peter Brown for braving heights to clean the house and to Karl for providing his time and skills as a restoration carpenter on the stairs. If you have any questions or comments please reply to this message or visit our web. Correction to text sent: JAMES SWEENEY (Jim), born 2 January 1866, at Augullies, (near Dunglow) Co. Donegal, Ireland. Died 30 January, 1924 at Longreach Hospital...etc.. M O'Donnell.
Can anyone please help with info on TOCAL? Does anyone have access to any old records or diaries? (None have survived on the property, currently.) Hoping to discover its history, people who have worked there, including more on my JAMES SWEENEY and past owners ie: MR. D.H. GREENWOOD in the 1920's. Many thanks, M. O'Donnell
Hi everyone, I'm new to the list, so please excuse the shouting. I'm a writer, live on the quiet side of the Gold Coast and hope someone can help me find a missing branch of my family tree. Desperately seeking the family of: JAMES SWEENEY (Jim) Born 2 January, 1966 at Augullies (near Dunglow) Co. Donegal, Ireland. Died 30 January, 1924 at Longreach Hospital, QLD and buried at Longreach Cemetary the following day. Witnesses to burial: Joe Browne & J. Martin. Burial Minister: Rev H.W. Jones, R.C. JAMES' parents were DENIS SWEENEY (b. 1839, d. 23 August, 1873, Dunglow, Co. Donegal, Ireland) and BRIDGET O'DONNELL (b. 1843, Donegal, Ireland, d. 26 August 1915, Kaikoura, New Zealand). After DENIS SWEENEY's death, BRIDGET and her five small children incl JAMES, emigrated to New Zealand on the OCEAN MAIL, arriving in Nelson NZ 8 November, 1874. They settled in Kaikoura, joining other members of the family who had earlier emigrated there through the Canterbury Scheme. In 1892, JAMES married ELIZABETH SLATTERY (b. 1870, Ballymacthomas, Tralee, Kerry, Ireland and daughter of DANIEL SLATTERY & MARY ROONEY) at Christchurch, New Zealand. They had a son, ROBERT JOHN SWEENEY, b. 19 May, 1897. Some time after Robert's birth the family moved to Queensland and JAMES ended up a Station Hand at TOCAL Station, Longreach. The owner of TOCAL at that time was Mr. H.D. GREENWOOD. JAMES was a well-known resident of the West, according to his Obituary (Longreach Leader, Fri, Feb 8, 1924). He was also an amateur jockey and a horse trainer. Two sons are mentioned in the Obituary as having served in WWI, but at this stage, we can only confirm the birth details of ROBERT JOHN SWEENEY and his WWI service. Nothing further is known of him or any other children. Nothing further is known of James' wife ELIZABETH. Many thanks, M. O'Donnell

Hello all, Wondering if anyone would have any information about CF Wakely & Sons of Millaa Millaa and for a period at Malanda. My Great-Uncle, Charles Frederick WAKELY, operated this store pre-1950 in this area. Wondering if anyone had any old photos, newspaper clippings etc that they would be able to copy and forward to me. I am only too happy to pay any postage and copying costs incurred. Thanks for your time. K. Gaffy Bundaberg, QLD
Janet Stevenson Carse (a sister of my grandfather) was born in Charters Towers in 1880 and died in Townsville in 1961 She married Philip Livingstone in 1923 probably in Townsville, but in 1961 when she died she was using the name Dinger Her address at the time of her death was 1 Tenth Avenue, Railway Estate, Townsville. There is no evidence of her ever having children. I can find no other references to Philip Livingstone and nothing is known of a Mr Dinger. I thought someone on the list may be able to help.
