    3. Hi MaryAnne You mentioned that you had lines of the QUINN family in your ancestry. I also have a QUINN in my family tree - Maurice Quinn who was a shepherd in the Gloucester area of NSW (his death certificate states he was struck by lightning while herding sheep). Would he perhaps be related to your QUINNs? Cheers. Those of you with relatives interred at Woodgrange Park Cemetery in Manor Park, London will be interested in this website. Woodgrange Park Cemetery in Manor Park London, has been in the press recently concerning the excavation of part of the Cemetery which has been sold by the owners for development of property. This has involved the excavation of thousands of graves in many cases without the permission of the families concerned. http://www.woodgrange.freehosting.net/ Denyse Bonney, Townsville

It is a database and collection of stories about the people of Australia, past and present. It is accessible to all Australians through the Internet, and welcomes contributions from everyone. Your first family is the earliest person in your family known to have lived in Australia. You may choose to submit information on the earliest generation of each branch of your family". It is not a place where you can expect to find your family tree. It may however, lead you to other relatives through the links on the site. It is to be as stated, a record of the first person in your family line or lines that came to Australia, regardless of the time period. The site has just been updated and now operates very efficiently. Take a visit, register and add your first Australian ancestor/s to this thoughtful concept. (3) From Legacy News & Tips. Some people who research their family history spend much effort getting birth, death, and marriage facts, but give little notice to what their ancestors did to provide for their "keep". Our ancestors were exactly like us in that they spent most of their waking hours in some type of work or occupation. Whether they kept house, farmed the land, or worked in a factory, they had a job to do. You might want to consider spending some time on your ancestors' resumes. Why did they do that job? Did they have more then one? Were there historical events that affected their occupational choices? Is their workplace still around? The first task of course is discovering what your ancestor did. Some sources include: Census records: Starting in 1841 England, & 1850 USA, the occupation of each member of the household is listed. This is the best place to start and what's neat is that you can check successive censuses to see if their occupation changed. - City Directories: These are helpful because they often list the occupation in addition to a home address. Like the census records, checking successive editions can show changes. Check you local library for old editions. - Obituaries: These contain a multitude of biographical information, including jobs. - Wills, Probate records, Military Pension records, and death certificates can also contain occupation information. - Your Name: Are you a Baker or Carpenter? If so then you probably had an ancestor with that occupation. In colonial times, most people had two names, not our three today. Often their name was listed followed by a comma and their occupation. In 1780, Henry Robert Baker was probably Henry Robert, baker. So be watchful of records where an occupation may be part of the identification. If you come across an occupation that you don't understand, check out one of the links at the end of this article for descriptions of old occupations. Perhaps your ancestor was an "ankle beater" (young person who helped drive cattle to market) or a "fower" (street cleaner or sweeper). How about a "pettifogger" (shyster lawyer) or "chandler" (makes or sells candles). Many of the ancestors in our families were farmers, which was a common father to son type of transition. But we also have a tailor, shoemaker, minister, and doctor. What a variety! Once you have a resume of your ancestor, you can begin to interweave it with their life events and the events that happened around them. Try to look for reasons that might explain why they had that occupation. Our grandfather, for example, migrated at the end of WW I to a larger town to find work and ended up a street car driver. Then when the Depression came and work was scarce, he started a small grocery store on his farm to help provide more income. These "larger" historical events shaped his occupation at the time. A nice touch for your heritage album would be to get pictures of where your ancestors worked. Whether it's the old family farm, or the bank where grandpa worked, it may not be there forever, so now is the time. Whether you have a picture or not, think about highlighting your ancestor's resume in your album, after all, they spent a lot of time at it to provide a living for themselves and their families. This week's column includes guidelines and suggested questions to get your relatives talking about family history. Travelled in from Canobie to the Manfred Arms Hotel with a drover named John Davidson, arriving on Sunday 16 June . He was to have proceeded to Richmond by coach on Tuesday 18, but death put an end to his earthly troubles on the afternoon of Monday 17 June. Davidson says that he thinks he died from Berri Berri or Scurvy, whilst publican Arthur Nicholls diagnoses the cause as dropsy or liver complaint. Davidson adds that he had no money that he was aware of. Was a married man. No post-mortum . Police not present at inquest.' Believed to have an uncle in Normanton. What I know -- I know when and how Fritz Peter Andreas Skau, Christina Benedicta Sondergaard and Hannah Theobald came to Australia -- (1871, 1872 and 1873 respectively). Hannah arrived as Mrs Charles Humphr(e)y but Charles died soon after and she remarried Samuel Robinson from Bradford, Yorkshire. Fritz Skau married Christina Sondergaard (1872). One of their children was Fritz Skau who married Florence Hannah Robinson (daughter of Samuel Robinson and Hannah Humphry/Theobald). These four are my great grand-parents. I know most of the details of the direct family. What I hope to find out is -- (1) when Samuel Robinson came to Australia (it has to be prior to 1877 as he and Hannah Humphr(e)/Theobald married on 4 Jan 1877 in Maryborough). (2) the movements of these two families after their marriages. I know the Skaus worked at the Archer cattle property at the time of their marriage, I know they were naturalised in Bowen in 1906 and I think part of their lives was spent in the Charters Towers area and I think he worked for the railways. (3) more of Samuel Robinson's parentage and his exact date of birth. (It is somewhere about 1850/1 - his parents were Joseph Robinson and Sarah Thornton). (4) more of Hannah Theobald's parentage -- she was born in Broxbourne, Hertford in 1842/5/6, her parents being John Theobald and "unknown". (5) anything about Samuel and Hannah's son, Frederick, born 20 May 1878 -- I know nothing more than this about him. (6) anything about Hannah's children from her first marriage to Charles Humphr(e)y. They were Alfred (b 1867), Emily (1870), Rosina (1872) and Francis Edgar (b 24 Jan 1875). I hope you're not sorry you asked!! <g> Elaine >-----Original Message----- >From: Hamilton [mailto:[email protected]] >Sent: Thursday, 28 December 2000 12:52 PM >To: [email protected] >Subject: New to list > > >Hi > >I'm new to this list so thought I'd post my interests. 1. Mac Kersie family from Ayr NQ

    3. Gidday Is there anyone out there looking at the MacKersie family from Ayr? In particular I am searching for information on Daisy Sarah Helen Holmes wife of James Donald Mackersie, (commonly known as Dan Mackersie). Daisy was born 1885, exact date not known, at Beenleigh Queensland, father William Holmes mother Harriet Anne Burton. She married Dan 3 Feb 1909 at Ayr. She died at Ayr 1917, exact date not known, as result of complications of child birth. The sex of child is not known. I have not been able to trace, with any certainty, either William Holmes or Harriet Burton who were married at Kilbrittain Co Cork Ireland 5 Sept 1871. I have managed to go back in the MacKersie (MucKersie) line into Fifeshire Scotland and the marriage of James MacKersie (b. 1845 Dunshalt Fifeshire) to Elizabeth Mcleay ((Betsy Mclay) date of birth not known at Cullen Banffshire)) in 1864 at Fifeshire but no further with any certainty. Cheers John Bryant

    3. Lorraine, From Lorna McDonald's "Rockhampton", there appears to have been the construction of the railway to Comet River, completed in March 1878, built by Robert Ballard. Altho there is mention of a dam on the Comet River, this appears to have been insugnificant. Hope this helps.
