    1. Tom Hill and the Sardine and Kangaroo Hills Mining Syndicate
    2. Deb Hill
    3. Hi everyone! I am looking for Thomas (Tom) Hill and any descendants. Tom Hill and his brother George William, came out from Wigsthorpe, Northampton, England and after working on the Queensland railways, they went to Ewan, Queensland. During 1919, two prospectors named Jack Mulhall and Alex Lane discovered a very rich tin show on Oakey Creek, about 4 and a half miles from the Ewan township in Queensland. They named the show the "Sardine". John Lennox was the general manager of the Sardine and Kangaroo Hills Mining Syndicate (K.H.M.S.) Battery. With the Sardine Mine later under the management of Joe Pryor, the battery was controlled by Tom Hill and the Canary was under the eye of Dudley Geary with Denny Donovan as mine boss. I have also heard the following story: Ernie Kruger's first ride in a motor car (Model T Ford) was from the Burdekin River to Ewan, a distance of 6 miles. Jack Kruger who was employed by the Kangaroo Hills Mining Syndicate of which John Lennox was General Manager drove Lennox to Hillgrove Station just before Christmas, 1922. Tom Hill, Battery Manager went along for company. When they reached the Burdekin on the return trip they had to leave the car and swim the river and walk to Ewan. The Model T Ford car sat on the far bank of the Burdekin for some three weeks before the water level was low enough for the car to cross. In late 1929, the Sardine mine no longer was a viable proposition and the company ceased operations. Would anyone be connected to this Tom Hill and his family or have any information that may be of some assistance? Cheers, Deb [email protected]

    3. I am researching this master mariner and "labour recruiter" who wrote articles in a Townsville newspaper (the Bulletin) in the early 1880's, probably about 1883. The National Library, Brisbane's John Oxley and State Library of NSW have no copies of the Townsville papers this early. Does aks have any other suggestions where I might find copies of these papers? ---------- Rob Clifton-Steele, Sydney, Australia Researching: VOS (NL, Kent, SA, NSW & Pacific), BLANCH (Glos), STEEL (Glos), GRAVES (NSW), BROMLEY (Glos & NSW), MCCORMACK (Tas), DAVIES (Tas), FERGUSON (Tas)

    3. Charters Towers sure gets a lot of interest from people researching family history from all over the world. It would be great to see a web site about charters towers with pictures and a story like our Irvinebank pages @ www.infocus.to/irvinebank If you read the comments in the guestbook you will see what a valuable resource the site has been for people researching family history. Has Charters got a similar resource already? Remember that people around here used to refer to Charters Towers as 'The World'. It would also be a good way to sell books on Charters Towers as we do about Irvinebank. By the Way, Charters Towers might be The World, but Irvinebank is the Centre of the Universe...<GRIN> -----Original Message----- From: The Hurles [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, 5 January 2001 8:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Charters Towers around 1890 Hi again Richard & List, My GGrandgfather arrived "On the Towers" around Feb 1872 and obtained a "Miners Right" in April/May of that year. 2. Hello list My GGrandfather's 2 sisters' husbands owened several gold mining leases in Charters Towers with others. I have a copy of one mining lease from state archives in Brisbane. (Thomas CHRISTIAN, Louis HAMANN, George Maurice JEVERS??,William JEVERS??, Friederich BANDHOLZ, Frederick PFIEFFIR, Thomas MILLS senior, Johan ROMBERG, Carls RIEDRICH, & Christian PARADIES) Some of the names are hard to read. Christian PARADIES is my line. After some other changes in owners the lease was sold to DAY DAWN Gold Mining Company on 30/9/1881. >From our map the mine appears to be bordered by School st., Mills st., Paul st., & Towers St. I would be very interested in some early mine photo's. My direct family line was Hermann BIRR who moved from Charters Towers to Ingham, Halifax area in early 1900's. Any information would be appreciated. Derek

    1. Re: Charters Towers Mines in the 1890's

    3. Hi again Richard, My ancestors, the Hooper Family, came from Charters Towers. My Great-Grandfather was an engine-driver at the Mills Day Dawn United Mine, 1890-1916. There were many major mines in the Towers in the 1890's. The best of these was the Day Dawn P.C., 1875-1913. It was the first mine in QLD to produce one million pounds worth of gold. The Mills Day Dawn United worked the same shoot at a greater depth and the wealth generated by the Day Dawn P.C.led to the sinking of the Brilliant Mine shaft and the discovery of that reef. Among the mines working at that time were Day Dawn Block and Wyndham, 1883-1912; Brilliant Extended, 1894-1919; Queen Cross, 1890-1916; Brilliant Block, 1892-1917; Victoria and Queen, 1893-1911; DD Gold Mine, 1895-1911; Victoria and Caledonia Block, 1899-1911. There were many others but the list is too long to reproduce here! By 1914 the estimate of gold ounces won from the fields had risen to 6 million. What a fortune that would be today. It is no wonder the Towers was then known to the locals as "The World". Many fortunes were won and lost at the Towers Stock Exchange which opened in 1890 - I wonder if that is how your Grandfather lost his gold? Best Wishes, Judy ---------- > .........

    3. Dear Richard, The following account of life in Charters Towers in the 1890's may be of interest to you. As a township the goldfield centre was fast assuming a position of importance. The hotels were many and their hosts, mostly successful old diggers, catered well for their freehanded customers. As most of the transport was carried on by means of cabs and buses good horses were a special feature. The cabs were unrivalled in Australia. Two turn-outs in particular, those of Bill Johnston and Jack Lewis, were worthy of a place in the streets of London. Each equipped with a fine team of four greys and were used by the mining magnates to transport the golden bars from battery to bank chamber. The miners on their standard wage of 60/- (shillings) weekly mostly patronised the hotels, and of these Bob Collins conducted an establishment where the mine managers drifted in daily to swop yarns concerning the latest make of stone and prospects of a big crushing. To add to the importance of the place a fine building for the QLD National Bank and a new Post Office were adding dignity to the expanding township. I looked up my plan of the known headstones in the Towers Pioneer Cemetary but did not see any for Mary Alice Faulkner. Best Wishes, Judy ---------- > > I am looking for any info about the mines and the way of life about that > time (just for interest really). > _________________________________________________________________________

    3. Hi Ray, Thanks a lot for the info. I think that Mary Alice was the wife of my grandfather although she was some 10 years older than him. I didn't have an actual date for her burial or her age. I am looking for any info about the mines and the way of life about that time (just for interest really). Grandfather was brought back home by family subscription and married my Grandmother in 1899 at Grantham, lincolnshire. Although his first wife was obviously not a direct ancestor, I would like to get details, if possible, of his journey to Queensland, his marriage, his life there, his wife's death and the cause, the reason for his return (I am told he lost all the gold he found but not how) in order to fill in a gap in the family book I am putting together. Thanks again for your help Regards Richard _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
