Hi List, Searching for additional information on the following family members or living relatives connected to them. While searching the Hambuechen name on the WWW, I came across the Tewantin Cemetery Records which listed a Joseph William, Teoo Arapai, and Walter Hugh Hambuechen all with a death date of 14-9-1984. Investigation by the list owner showed that they died in a auto accident. Attempts to find other family members or records have failed. Any help the list can provide will be appreciated. As you know, you are frequently getting virus warnings form all and sundry but please read the following "Virus Alert. Attention all email users not currently protected by McAfee AntiVirus Defense. There is, at this time, a high risk of attack from the AnnaKournikova virus or Anna virus. Also known as VBS/SST, this viral worm is said to be spreading twice as fast as the Love Bug virus of last year. Posing as a photo of tennis player Anna Kournikova, it infects your system when a user opens the email attachment. Once activated, it emails itself to everyone in the user's Microsoft Outlook address books. Users should immediately delete any email with the following: Subject: Here you have, ;o) Body: Hi: Check This! Attachment: AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs The Anna virus eluded detection among some anti virus providers. .........." The reason I am posting this warning is that on Tuesday, 13 Feb a large state wide organisation I know, experienced this virus. This is not an advert for McAfee or any other supplier. Please ensure your Anti Virus software is current. John List Administrator AUS-NQ & FHA NQ

Gold was found by JV Mulligan 17.1.1876 on the Hodgkinson R. N.W. of present day Mareeba. Hodgkinson R. was named after W.O.Hodgkinson who was around at the time but also on the early part of the Burke and Wills expedition, Mining Warden of the Charters Towers Gold Field and founder editor of the Mackay Mercury. Anyway if you look at a map of the northern part of the Atherton tableland you may find the Hodgkinson River. It is usually an oversized puddle. That is all you will probably find of the area. According to Glenville Pike's self published "Pioneers' Country" 1976, "Townships flourished around the principal reefs. Few people now remember or have ever heard of the Townships of Wellesley, Waterford, Watsonville (not the one near Herberton), Stewart Town, Union Town, Beaconsfield, New Northcote, Old Northcote, which once flourished but died as the gold ran out." British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone became Lord Beaconsfield. The Principal Towns on the Goldfield were Thornborough and Kingsborough. I can't find the reference but as I remember it in one of Pikes books the last surviving town was Thornborough, the school closed in 1923 which was the end of the Goldfield although with the 1930's depression the General Grant and Tyrconnell mines had on on again off again existence, the Tyrconnel finally closing in 1942. Since Tyrconnell was mentioned I would like to point out that today it is operated as a Heritage tourism venture with working quartz crushing battery. Hi Kathy, A follow-up to my reply direct to you. As I told you, being a grand-daughter of a pioneer who started off in Ballarat and then followed the gold to Crocodile Creek (now Bouldercombe - SW of Rockhampton), Cape River diggings, he married in 1869 in Townsville to follow the rush to Gilberton and finally after the Palmer settled in Cooktown, I am fascinated with all NQ history of that era hence my vast collection of books. As Peter Flecker said the Hodgkinson is well covered in Glenville Pike's 'Queensland Frontier' and also in Frank Dempsey's 'Old Mining Towns of North Qld.' After a bit of 'fossicking' I've struck 'gold' - in "Angor to Zillmanton" by Colin Hooper on page 113 there is a great map of the field with Beaconsfield clearly marked - direct east of Thornborough on the upper reaches of the Hodgkinson R. and on page 123 it has as follows:- 'BEACONSFIELD : Named after the British P.M. Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield. In 1878 there were four hotels; Jacob Weitzel's Monarch, Norman James' Whitehorse, A.C. Taylor's St. George and the Beaconsfield first owned by J.W Reid then Lewis Grosskoff then D.N Rice, a store and baker, Jacob Weitzel, a store and butcher, D.N. Rice. A Post Office operated in 1877-78 which was reduced to a receiving office until 1891. W. Bul ran the 10 head Monarch & Co. Quartz Crushing Machine here in 1878 which was still working in 1891. In 1878 an arastra existed here. In 1910 the mill was removed to Kidston.' Beaconsfield is also mentioned in the overall story of the Hodgkinson - but too much to copy. I do hope your gggrandfather was one of the publicans mentioned. Don't hesistate to write again if you think I can be of help. My grandfather was Patrick McNamara CORBETT and his brother was John CORBETT whose grave is on Robin Hood Station at Cobbold Gorge a lovely spot now opened to tourism, south of Forsayth. I will be grateful for any info. on either. Cheers to all on list. Margaret (Corbett) Simson Brisbane.

While researching my mother's great grandfather I saw on his marriage certificate he was married at Hodgkinson"s Goldfields Beaconsfield. He was a publican there. I have tried to find this place on a map but no luck. Does anyone now where it may have been and any thing about it?
