My mother has begun to write a history of Rotokauri, just north-west of Hamilton - the lake itself, surrounding district, local identities etc, post- and pre- 'colonisation'. She is most interested to receive information (resources, personal accounts etc), or contact details of people who could contribute memories, stories, notes... etc. She has interviewed some people, and as the weather turns wintery, will be ready to get underway again. Do you have an ex-Rotokauri resident in your tree? Would they like to help? She's not into email yet, but if you have any ideas, people, notes etc you think would be useful, please pass them through me (off list is best I think: [email protected]). Alternatively, contact me for her snail mail address. Jo in Glenfield (4) The NZ Henderson marriage transcripts (with the brides and grooms matched) for 1840-1930 are online. As a start, Mantra picked up about fifteen photos at an auction in England. We know where each photo was made because each has the name of the photographer and the address where the photo was taken. Several are from New Zealand. Now we are finding several photos were taken in New Zealand of people who came from Belfast, Leitrim, and other places we are trying to identify. We are posting the photos in each county from whence the subjects came, and the county in which the photos were taken. If someone, possibly the National Coordinator of New Zealand Project, will add these photos to their project website, we hopefully can find the families they belong to. The first photos were posted on the County Dublin site (four are up so far). Further inquires from them have have included their availability to visit other centres in New Zealand IF 200 SAMPLES can be obtained at any one site. Search for and submit details contained on birth, baptism, death, burial and marriage registrations; over 500 people have submitted nearly 18,000 records to date. Take a look around the site and be sure to register surnames you're researching with the Australasia Genealogical Research Connection at http://www.geocities.com/hutton_l/connect/ (4) On Saturday, 10th March a new 1911 CENSUS REGISTER was launched that offers an opportunity to register your research needs if you want to inspect the 1911 census returns for England & Wales. Details are on our site at http://members.aol.com/census75/news.htm "NEW 1911 CENSUS REGISTER If you're an historian who wants to inspect and copy the 1911 census records for England & Wales, please click here cens[email protected] and register your full name and adddress and evening phone number and tell me you want to inspect the 1911 census records. No other information is required. The survey is necessary to enable historians to refute any suggestions from Government officials or others that there is little or no demand for early access to the 1911 census. Please note that the closing date for registrations will be Saturday, 28th April 2001. If you can spare an extra minute, I would be glad to know how you first heard about this Internet site. Denis McCready [Editor]. A VERY BRIEF SUMMARY [Especially for SN [Australia]] As you will be able to see from these pages, Lord Chancellor's Instrument No12 of 1966 does not explicitly list the 1911 Census records amongst those to be closed for 100 years. And the Public Records Act 1958 seems to place a legal duty on the Keeper of Public Records [The Head of the Public Record Office] to arrange that reasonable facilities are available to YOU for inspecting and copying the 1911 Census records. It would seem that the 1911 census should have been available for YOU to inspect and copy from 1966 onwards - for more than 30 years. A Select Committee of MPs may be willing to conduct an independent investigation. G'day folks, An interesting lesson here for us all. Did you know about the Law records being on the net? Use the google search engine and this criteria "George Bridges Plantagenet FIELD" complete with " and " and see what happens. Now...have you had an idea yet? ------- Forwarded message follows ------- Date forwarded: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 21:56:34 -0700 From: "Gordon Barlow" <[email protected]> Date sent: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 23:54:18 -0500 Organization: Subject: [India-L] New South Wales To: [email protected] Forwarded by: [email protected] George Bridges Plantagenet (don't ask!) FIELD was a Captain in the 23rd Native Infantry, pensioned 1828 and retired to Calcutta, where he died in 1861. HOWEVER... while surfing in Google the other night I tapped in his full name on the off-chance, and up came a report on his trial in Sydney, NSW, in 1838, before the Supreme Court of NSW for killing a horse that had invaded his wheat field. I'm sure you will all be pleased to know he was found Not Guilty (he claimed to have shot at it with powder only, and that the prosecution arose from a conspiracy by his "assigned servants" - prisoners, I assume), but some questions arise. Was it a common event, for retired India Army Officers to go wheat-farming in NSW around 1838? Second, why would a man retire as Captain, aged 39? Third, would there be a record of his entry into NSW, and back to Bengal? (His wife died in Calcutta in 1840. I don't know if he was there at the time, though it would be a natural enough thing for him to do, to return to civilization after such dreadful treatment in the convict colony.) Fourth, how would he have come to end up at Burragorang, way up-country from Sydney? The whole thing sounds bizarre. I got the surprise of my life to find the report. It just goes to show that casual searching for unusual names can be a profitable exercise. Harry Benjamin CORNWELL (born about 1879 in England) married Teresa Naomi BRAYE in the London (England) area in 1907. I believe that they emigrated to Australia about 1925-30, leaving one son behind and taking another child/children with them. Does anybody recognise these names, please? Mary Newman in Wolverhampton, England

Thanks Beattie When I received your email, I checked my last one - 20March. Maybe we are all too busy. My interests in the north include: 1. WESCHE / SCHAPER / KADDATZ - 1880- current - any connection to any of these names - I would love to hear from you. We have already completed one book but are concentrating on an update with other details. 2. OWENS / MCGAW / MOORE 1880 - current - any connection with these families from around Herberton, Cairns, Atherton. In particular, g uncle James OWENS, born 1901 - what happened to him? Got the rest of his siblings and half brother and sister but he went bush! Know he married and got a bushel of kids!! His mother was Ada McGAW (nee MOORE, formerly OWENS) of Mareeba. These are the main families from up north. The rest are mostly Central or Southern Qld. Thank you for any help. Lorrae Johnson Plainland Qld 4341 Researching: 1.
