    3. Hi Cathy, I agrees with what Howard says about there being no trams as such, in Townsville. I have lived here most of my life and have never heard of them. I think it is more likely referring to what were called Rail Motors which plied between Townsville and other close towns. They were tram-like and carried passengers only. Though whether they would have been around in 1896 I don't know. The other problem you have is that the early papers of Townsville are not indexed and are only available on microfilm. What paper the accident might have been reported in and whether copies have survived is another problem. I know that the public libraries have filmed copies of most papers, but don't have the resources to be able to trawl through them to find particular items. However, the State Library of Queensland also has copies of Townsville papers, so it might be worthwhile to approach them. They have an online reference service on their website at www.slq.qld.gov.au so might be prepared to help. Whether they would charge for the service, I don't know. If they can't help you, I might be able to look on my next trip to the Library, but I don't know when that will be, it could be quite some time. Let me know if you need me to try for you. Hope this helps, Jenny in Townsville ----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard Bailey" <hab1945@ihug.com.au> To: <AUS-NQ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 12:19 AM Subject: Re: Tram Accident Dear Kathy, I am interested in your posting as I am something of a tram buff, and I have driven trams in Brisbane and Melbourne. I have a book called " Tramways of Australia" and I can say with some certainty that Townsville has never run trams. My mother and I were both born there though I was raised in Brisbane and I had never heard her speak of trams. To my knowledge Rockhampton is the furthest north trams ever advanced. This does of course raise an ambiguity. Trains are sometimes called trams also. This is often the case with the small loco's used on the cane fields. Sydney also had "trams" that were powered by steam locomotives. The main rail line north is actually the boundry between Hermit Park and Railway Estate so I feel safe in saying that the accident was more likely caused by a "train". Perhaps you could try approaching Qld Rail for information. 3. Hi Kathy, Howard & AUS-NQ listers, I have heard of trams in Townsville, but can't think where I heard or read these details just at the moment. I think though that these trams are not the passenger variety you are thinking of from down south, but more likely to be sugarcane, mining or cargo trams that were used. Annette, Townsville. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard Bailey" <hab1945@ihug.com.au> To: <AUS-NQ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 12:19 AM Subject: Re: Tram Accident > Dear Kathy, > > I am interested in your posting as I am something of a tram buff, and I have > driven trams in Brisbane and Melbourne. > > I have a book called " Tramways of Australia" and I can say with some > certainty that Townsville has never run trams. 3. Used with permission. ********************* GENUKI FAMILY HISTORY NEWS No 163 18 April 2004 Hi Everyone and welcome to this weeks GENUKI Family History News. A while ago I mentioned a website for Bow Creek, this has a new, and much easier to remember URL at : http://www.bowcreek.co.uk They have also added some navigable Family Trees of a few actual Bow Creek Families. The Parish Chest have added the following retailers to their site: Family Deeds, Chapel Books, Family History CD, CJ Genealogical Collections, Traces Publications, Yesterdays Names, Linton & District Local History Society. http://www.parishchest.com NEW RELEASES FROM ARCHIVE CD BOOKS Black's Guide to Surrey 1886 An excellent 19th century guide book which provides historical and geographical information about the following places in Surrey; Wimbledon, Kew, Richmond, Kingston-On-Thames, Weybridge, Chertsey, Egham, Bagshot, Croydon, Caterham, Reigate, Dorking, Betchworh Park, Leatherhead, Epsom, Esher, Woking Junction, Guildford, Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere. Read about these places as your ancestors would have viewed them. Archive CD Books homepage - http://www.archivecdbooks.com WEBPAGE REVIEWS http://www.virtualsask.com/barry/ This to me was an absolutely fascinating website. It contains the diary of a journey from Barry in South Wales to Buenos Aires in 1913. Each day activities are mentioned, from descriptions of Barry docks, to Buenos Aires, with a stop in Las Palmas. Conditions are described, as are many of the crew, and there are some great photographs and postcards as well. The site is truly very interesting and I hugely enjoyed reading it. It is very simple to navigate and easy and quick to load. A lovely little insight into the early twentieth century http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cotyroneireland/index1.html This is the website of an online community researching interests in Co Tyrone in Ireland. A simple website, but one with fantastic resources on it. Amongst the resources I found were transcripts of 1766 and 1834 censuses, Births and Roman Catholic births in Coagh, church photographs, and in a section heading church records a large array of various records pertaining to churchs all over the county, including baptism records, financial records and all sorts of other records. Nice simple transcripts are provided, and this website is a bonus for all researching ancestors in County Tyrone. Simple, easy and effective design. http://www.search.digitalhandsworth.org.uk/engine/custom/gallery.asp?lstExhi bitionType=3 Part of the Digital Handsworth project this is a gallery of images from the 1870’s and 1880’s baptisms in St Mary’s Church. The site is a little complicated, and takes a bit of time to get used to, but once you do you are presented with scanned images from the baptism register itself. The images however are not the easiest to read, and you will need exceptionally good eyesight to study them. However they are there, and it will no doubt prove useful to some people. Have a good look around the rest of the website for a collection of images from Handsworth past and present. But as with many collections of images, be prepared for a slow load. READERS QUERIES I am trying to find out what happened to the family of; Frank Marmaduke Woodhams born 20 April 1865 in Tonbridge Kent, died on 27 November 1905 whilst homewood bound on board RMS Otrato off the coast of Barbados. He is buried in the military cemetery there. Frank was a Sgt. Major in the Royal Engineers. In 1889 he married Eva Maude Liddle in York. They had five children Beatrix b. 14-9-1891 and Frank b. 14-9-1893 both born in York. Jack b.1894, Dorothy b.1895 and, Harold b. 1900.all born Cape Colony South Africa. Jack was deaf. In 1901 were all living 4 Esplanade Stirling Scotland. When Frank died in1905 the family were still living in Scotland. (info from RE Magazine) What happened to them, none of my family know. Frank was my great uncle. There must be cousins somewhere out there, we would love to know what happened to them. John Garrett j.w.g.g3you@btinternet.com MALONE...JAMES & ANN. Can anyone throw light on these ancestors please? All I know is that they married in September 1809 at St Mary's Parish Church RADCLIFFE, LANCASHIRE. James was a WHEELWRIGHT by trade. The Parish Register doesn't help with where they were born, who their parents were or where they lived...and I have been unable to find any trace of their deaths (a gravestone, for instance, might help pinpoint their ages apart from any other information). Two sons have been traced...JOHN MALONE (cobbler by trade...lived & died in TOTTINGTON) & THOMAS MALONE (died HOLCOMBE.) Both these sons married & had children. Personally, I imagine that JAMES & ANN MALONE would not have moved far from their 2 sons & their families - so my feeling is that they lived & died within a few miles of RADCLIFFE, LANCS. But their deaths have not yet been found in the Parish Registers in the area. Because the surname MALONE is Irish I also suspect that James was the first in my family to come to Lancashire from Ireland Anyone who has a theory or who has come across them in memorial inscriprions or parish registers (probably within a 5 mile radius of RADCLIFFE)...please do contact me & I would be very grateful. Thank you. Tony Malone - email tony@malone6.fsnet.co.uk . We are looking for the marriage of Albert Sawyer to a Florence Rose. It would have been in the very late 1890's or early 1900's. We think Albert was born in Surrey. He was a Packing case maker and they resided at 16 Hargreave Square Bermondsey in 1911. Also the birth of Ellen Mayatt (birthname but known as Nellie) in Bromley area around 1885 she married William Francis Hill June Q of 1915 and had two children William Albert Edgar Hill and Eileen Elsie Maude Hill. We have found a Nellie Mayatt in the 1901 census from St Mary Cray but cannot find a birth in the name of Ellen. Mayatt appears to be an unusual name and can find very few entries for the name. Any help with these inquiries would be greatly appreciated. PROGRAM Digital Imaging for Genealogists (DIG) :-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-: DIG Review: PhotoMix Collage 5.1 Introduction If a picture is truly worth a thousand words, then the value of a family history photo collage should equal several thousand more. A family collage combining several generations of family groups or individual family members is a great way to compare family features and resemblances, whereas a collage illustrating the growth of a single individual from birth to retirement age can provide a concise overview of that person's life. In this issue of UpFront, they take a look at PhotoMix Collage, one of the many graphic/imaging programs developed by fCoder Group International, http://www.fcoder.com Marketed as shareware and designed for beginners, the main purpose of PhotoMix is to simplify the process of "mixing" images to quickly create an attractive photo collage. Although wary of promotional literature the PhotoMix Web site is not exaggerating when it claims, "You may know nothing of computer image processing and still get stunning 'professional-like' results." http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041504/web/fig1.jpg http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041504/web/fig2.jpg http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041504/web/fig3.jpg http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041504/web/fig4.jpg http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041504/web/fig5.jpg http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041504/web/fig6.jpg PhotoMix 5.1 is available directly from the developer at http://www.photomix.com or http://www.fcoder.com. After lengthy discussions involving people interested in promoting South African genealogy, ideas and plans came together to make it possible for the Genealogical Society of South Africa (GSSA) to open a virtual branch. This branch is known as eGSSA. For many years there have been people who, for various reasons, could not join a regular GSSA branch. Some of these reasons include living too far from a branch or living outside South Africa. 3. World War I veteran loved life on the land JACK MAYNE 1895-2000 One of Australia's last World War I heroes passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Toowoomba on October 20. Jack Mayne had celebrated his 105th birthday with his family in September. Jack saw service on the Western Front as an artillery gunner. He hated the futility of war and could not wait to resume his career on the land which had started pre-war as a jackaroo on Banget in western NSW. When he bought his first selection in the Gayndah district in 1926 he felt he had started on his boyhood dream and ambition of owning and running his own property. This dream culminated when he bought Wealwandangie, a top property in the Springsure district which is still in the family. Jack and his wife Kitty (nee McDiarmid) had four sons, and he was immensely proud that he was able to start each one on properties in the Springsure/ Rolleston area. Jack retired to Toowoomba with his second wife Kathleen (Kitty passed away in 1955). He continued his constructive role with his advice and knowledge on all the family properties. He set high standards, in particular his commitment to leaving the land more productive than when he acquired it and, importantly, environmentally safe. This dedication to the land and care for the well-being of future generations is the legacy he would most like to leave. Jack was a very private person who shunned publicity. He described his greatest achievement in life to be the respect and love of his family, his friends, his love of the land and abiding love and faith in the future of Australia. His sons said the following passage described Jack to a tee: "There is no failure except in no longer trying, There is no defeat except from within, No really insurmountable barrier Save our own inherent weakness of purpose." He lived by this belief in himself, strengthened by self-discipline and commitment to excellence. Printed in "The Chronicle", Toowoomba 7 November 2000. 3. Dear listers, friends , romans, countryman After many more hours and hours and hours of research and transcribing (over 5000 entries on my database). I have updated the listings of Mackay district hotels and Licensees up to 1935 and some later. Please note this is done as a free service for researchers and family historians as part of our society's policy of promoting the history of Mackay and district. So feel free to download as a resource for your own society's records or link to our pages. to see the updated pages go to http://www.geocities.com/ghh_mackay/research/research.html and follow the links. I am always looking for more information on hotels and licensees if anyone can help and I am in the process of continually updating the reference sources next to the entries, which I neglected to do at the start for the first drafts (I did not realise at the time that it would be bigger then Ben Hur). I would like to add photographs in the future from our collection but webspace does not allow it...So if anyone knows of anyone who would be able to supply us with free webhosting beyond 15mb limit please let me know.
