G'day, my understanding is that at that time, each Infantry Brigade had one Field Ambulance, of the same number. So 3rd Fd Amb was part of 3rd Brigade. In turn, this was part of the 1st Australian Division. Other units forming part of 3rd Brigade were 9th (Queensland), 10th & 11th (Sth Aust), and 12th (mixed) Battalions. The "Official History" of Australiua in the war was edited by Dr C. E. W. BEAN. There was also a companion volume, The Official Medical History ..., but copies of this are not common. I had a bit of luck, and found a reference to my ancestor (10th Fd Amb) in it. As your bloke was absent for 3 years, I suggest you read "The Broken Years" by Bill GAMMAGE.
