    3. The Scratchley they would be referring to is Fort Scratchley at the eastern end of Newcastle near Nobbys breakwater. It was an artillery emplacement, and fired on the Japanese subs that shelled Newcastle after Sydney. these days it is a military museum and well worth a visit.
