    3. Dear Lenore, War correspondents are employees of newspapers and radio and tv stations and news services. They are paid wages and expenses by their organisations. Freelance journalists also work in the field trying to sell their stories to who ever they can. The inability of the media to get it right, that is to put forward the truth is restricted by government and the military. The media can also get it so terribly wrong even when given the facts. Tet 1968 in South Viet Nam is a classic example. This country produced, in my humble opinion, the greatest of all war correspondents in World War 1 in the form of C E W Bean. To give you an idea of the difficulties involved I am reminded of the title of a book, 'The First Casualty' by Phillip Knightley, ISBN 0-15-631130-5 pbk, it is a good read. The title comes from a quotation from US Senator Hiram Johnson in 1917,'the first casualty when war comes is truth.'
