Hello listers / readers, Hopefully, this listing message will be of interest to people residing in Adelaide, South Australia, especially any people with the family name of SWANN. I have just completed researching and transcribing into Microsoft WORD 97, six (6) personal WW1 diaries which also contain newspaper cuttings and photographs. The diaries were kept by an Australian soldier and A.F.C. pilot at home and overseas. Lieutenant Lyell Keith Swann MM Born at Keyneton. Son of George Lomax Swann and *Alvena Swann ( *Jamestown ), 170 Wattle Street, New Parkside. South Australia. Attended the Prince Alfred College, Adelaide. South Australia. Diaries commence: 14th February, 1916. Enlisted AIF Adelaide, S.A.: 14th March, 1916. ( 20 9/12 years ) ( Enlisted 14th March 16. Private in Exhibition Camp from 16th March until 12 April. From then until 26th was in 3/50th at Mitcham. From 26th April to 12th May at Cheltenham for musketry. From 15th May until 9th June N.C.O's school at Mitcham again. 12th June allotted to 4/5 Pioneers, but re-transferred to 18/10th. Remained there as a Cpl. until the 21st June 1916. Transferred that day to B. coy as a Sgt. ) Died France: 14th November, 1918. ( 23 years ) If any lister / reader known of any SWANN families, maybe you would be kind enough to make contact and enlighten them re the diaries existence and transcribing etc.. There is every possibility that the transcribed diaries will be published in book form / or placed on an appropriate UK Web Site. I would dearly like to make contact with SWANN families who believe they are relatives of Lyell Keith Swann. In the commencement of diary one (1), an entry refers to " THE GUMMY MOB " ( Sgt. " B " Coy. ) and I would be delighted to hear from anyone that can shed any light on this expression / or who or what it refers to!
