    3. For those who have not heard, from the ABC website: A piece of Australia's military history has gone under the hammer tonight in Sydney, setting what is said to be a new world record. The nation's last privately-owned Gallipoli Victoria Cross sold for $1 million, plus the buyer's premium. It had been posthumously awarded to Captain Alfred Shout, who fought at Gallipoli during World War I. The successful bidder wishes to remain anonymous and will work through the RSL to put the medal on display at the war memorial in Canberra. Linda

    3. Hi All: A postcard-sized 1915 watercolour painting of Anzac Cove, Gallipoli by Horace Moore-Jones sold to a local man for $NZ55,000 (=$A44,600) at an auction at Auckland on Friday 28 July, or five times what was expected. It had been expected to bring between $NZ 8000-12,000. Sapper Moore-Jones died in Hamilton in 1922, trying to help people trapped in a burning hotel. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/search/story.cfm?storyid=00033D33-B7C9-14C9-B50D83 027AF1010E Here is more on Moore-Jones: http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/war/anzacday-moorejones http://medals.nzdf.mil.nz/warrants/f4anzacmedallion.html Yours, John Wilson (Wellington)
