    3. Hi Everyone, RootsWeb is in the process of switching over to new upgraded list management software and this list is due to be migrated in the next day or so. The changeover should be smooth. The changes primarily involve the administration tools that keep the list running behind the scenes. Some/most of you would have received an email from Rootsweb a few days ago mentioning this. For those subscribed in normal LIST mode you shouldn't notice any changes nor have to do anything. DIGEST subscribers may notice minor changes. I am unsure if subscribers will get a message saying that they have just subbed to this list (which may confuse people seeing that they are already on this list and did nothing to re-subscribe). If you do get such a message, please ignore it. Below is a summary of the known differences. List name --------- The list name is changing from AUS-MILITARY-L to just AUS-MILITARY, although the '-L' extension will still work for a while. Subscribing/Unsubscribing. -------------------------- As you are all subscribed, I don't need to mention the minor differences in subscription here. To unsub from the list, there is now only one address to use. It is <mailto:AUS-MILITARY-request@rootsweb.com> (you may notice that the -L and -D parts have disappeared from this address). Remember you need to put "unsubscribe" in the subject and body of the e-mail. Posting address. ---------------- To post a message or reply to the list, you can still use the old address which was <mailto:AUS-MILITARY-L@rootsweb.com> but people are recommended to use the new shorter address where possible <mailto:AUS-MILITARY@rootsweb.com> Are you subbed in both LIST and DIGEST modes? --------------------------------------------- The new (Mailman) software does not allow a person to be subbed in both modes with the same address. If this applies to you, your DIGEST subscription will be automatically deleted when the list is migrated and you will have to use a second address to re-sub in DIGEST mode. If you are subbed in DIGEST mode only, there is no problem. DIGEST formats. --------------- Digest subscribers will notice some changes to the list digests. Firstly, the digest volume and issue number may be different (out of sequence) from what you had been receiving. Secondly, your digests may arrive in a different format than you are used to. Currently the digest is defaulted to "plain" format and is a single email that one scrolls through. Some Outlook users may prefer the older "MIME" format which (I believe) just show the headers and the user has to click on each header to see the whole post. If you would prefer the older MIME format, please contact me privately at <mailto:AUS-MILITARY-admin@rootsweb.com> Apparently in the future users will be able to change their digest format themselves. Headers and Filters. -------------------- If you use email headers to filter list mail to a special folder in your email program you may need to check whether your filters will need tweaking as some of the email headers will change. Cross-posting and Reply-to-All. ------------------------------- People are strongly discouraged from cross-posting to other lists and people. The old software would strip all other addresses found in the To:, CC: and BCC: fields, however one problem with the new software is that it does not strip these extra addresses, so if someone then does a Reply-To-All, their reply will go to all the lists/people in the original email. This can cause huge confusion and problems. Therefore, if you want to post to multiple lists/people, please do so using multiple emails with a single TO: address in each. As this list is set for Reply-to-List, there is no use in people using Reply-To-All, but if you do, please check the addresses carefully before sending. Questions. ---------- If you have questions/problems with the new list when it is migrated (or even before), please email me privately at <mailto:AUS-MILITARY-admin@rootsweb.com>. Cheers Linda List-admin AUS-MILITARY
