    3. Morning Linda, Yes, they are light horse. The white stripe in the puggaree (hat band)introduced in 1912 (this was changed in 1930 to Maroon) plus the leggings and jodphurs. I would say it was taken in Australia by the gum trees in the background. It is hard to accurately date the photo, but the cut of the civilian and the other waistcaot gives the impression of the WW1 period. For World War 1 the Army adopted a plain Khaki pugaree but a number of Light horsemen continued to wear the 1912 pattern pugaree during the war. Hope it helps. It has been hacked about a bit, and used for a card to wind lace onto. It is only after getting home and looking at the picture on my screen that I realised it MAY be a group of WWI or WWII Light Horsemen. If anyone could have a look at the photograph for me at http://static.flickr.com/89/229885390_dfef96a912_b.jpg and throw any light on the subject, it would be appreciated. Next week I will unwind the lace and get the final missing bit that is still available Thanks in Advance Linda kapana@netspace.net.au (although others on the list may be interested in your thoughts, too) ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-MILITARY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Thanks to Neville, plus others offlist. I now have to admit I have found out more, but I want to say a couple of things in my defence first! The photo was taken as part of documentation of the contents of a needlework basket. I knew it was a photo of people, but I was working so quickly that it was only when I got home I realised they were in military uniform. Or I may have taken more notice at the time. Then, it was only late last night I got to the sheet compiled by the cataloguer for checking. And found the notation "explanation on the other side". By that time I was kicking myself for not unwrapping the lace, but thought it would be just foreground and more boots. Although that black line up the middle was there ..... So I have been for a drive this morning, and looked at it again. And there is a scan of the full photo now at http://static.flickr.com/96/230647680_4a6b823c5d_o.jpg And the label pasted on the back appears almost complete. It reads: ".... K Camp on Thomson River / .....to 28th 1908. Men getting / dinner from Cooks" So there you go. For those unfamiliar with our local geography, the Thomson River is in Gippsland, quite near the current location of the photograph. Wish I had the whole photo. But it is a nice one of the stove. Cheers Linda
