If the initials are after his name they could mean Surname- VD(Volunteers Decoration) CPT (Captain) D (first initial?) Otherwise they could mean something to do with the Vetinary sections, such as Vetinary Division Corp Training Depot regards Stephen ----- Original Message ----- From: "The Walkers" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 22, 2002 6:25 PM Subject: V D C P T D 31 BN > Can anyone please help me with the initials V D C P T D 31 BN (I can get 31 > Battalion) but not the rest. > > This man was in the Australian Army WWII. > > Many thanks, > Mari Walker, Adelaide, Sth Australia > Member #6657 SAGHS > Researching: > Sth Aust : Major interests: HART, MAIN, THREDGOLD, TILLER, LEHMANN > Minor interests: JEFFERIES, JOHNSTON, LARKIN, O'TOOLE, HENDER, DOWNING, > MOLLER, MURPHY > Australian interests: > Victoria : LEHMANN descendants, CAMPBELL > WA : MOLLER, HART, LEHMANN descendants > NSW : MAYNARD descendants > New Zealand: HART descendants > USA (California) : MURPHY/KELLEY > England : HART, RUSHER, THREADGOLD > > > > > ==== AUS-MILITARY Mailing List ==== > First AIF Order of Battle 1914-1918 > http://www.adfa.edu.au/~rmallett/index.html > >
Mari, Could also mean Platoon D of 31 Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps. The VDC were the "Dad's Army" or Home Guard, whatever you want to call it and was originally made up from WW1 veterans who were to old to join up again and members of the RSL. Concerned townsfolk or those who were ineligible to fight overseas joined the ranks thereafter. Over 50,000 men were handed over to the Army in May 1941 to defend Australia.
