    1. RE: [AUS-MIL] Mentioned in Despatches?
    2. Neville Gibbons
    3. Morning Linda, I have reviewed his file, your question relates to the period during the Battle of Messines, south of Ypres Belguim, during which he received a gun shot wound to the back. Page 38 has no entry of being awarded a Mention in Dispatches. I have checked the Honour and Awards Recommendations file at the Australian War Memorial again no mention of a formal recommendation. From the entry on Page 8 of his file, it states he was worthy of being mentioned in the 10th Infantry Brigade Routine Orders for his conduct nduring the Battle and it was taken no further apart from being noted on his file. We the (Army) can still do on occasion mention a person in the units Routine Orders and this is recorded on their Personal File, information such as this would be used either on their Annual Report in the case of a NCO, or when considering the promotion of a Private soldier as what appears to have happened to Donald when he returned to the Battalion after his spell in Hospitial with his Gunshot Wound. -----Original Message----- From: Linda Barraclough [mailto:kapana@netspace.net.au] Sent: Thursday, 20 July 2006 3:39 PM To: AUS-MILITARY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-MIL] Mentioned in Despatches? Hi Everyone, I am beavering away on my Whitelaw article - thank you to all who have offered assistance. I do have one specific question, if anyone can help. At the bottom of Page 8 in the dossier of Donald John Whitelaw at http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine.asp?B=8386216&I=1&SE=1 There is an entry headed "Laudatory" which talks of his conduct during, I think, the Messines campaign. Is this what is normally referred to as "Mentioned in Despatches"? Or is it some other form of comment that was routinely attached to files? Thanks, in advance, for any advice, Linda ==== AUS-MILITARY Mailing List ==== First AIF Order of Battle 1914-1918 http://www.adfa.edu.au/~rmallett/index.html

    3. Linda, Altho not an expert, I am writing a history of the enlistments from our area for WW1(750 odd) and have a good idea of the spheres of conflict including Egypt, Fance, Messopotomia and Rabaul, and am conversant with most AWM data and research facilities. . I would like to read the draft of your material. Ian

    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, I am looking for a little bit of help from any WWI experts who might be out there. Reason being, I am completing an article for publication (soon!) on the Whitelaw family of Briagolong, who had six brothers enlist for WWI - three were KIA in France and one died of wounds soon after return. Several also served at Gallipoli. I have most of the details, dates etc, but I am no military historian. So what I am really after is anyone who would be prepared to read the draft article for me (it should be finished in a couple of hours), and point out to me any glaring contextural stuff/interpretive stuff I have missed. If anyone would be able to read the article, which I would send as an e-mail attachment, and make comment, please drop me an e-mail offlist at kapana@netspace.net.au Unfortunately this is a love job, so much as I would love to be able to offer an editing fee - I can't. But I can promise to acknowledge and send a copy of the final article. Thanks! Linda

    2. JohnB
    3. Hi Friends I am searching for any information on Henry Stuart Boyle date and place of birth not known. He served in the Boer War rank Private, Unit 3 (Queensland Mounted Infantry) CTGNT. His address at enlistment for Boer War service was c/- G Boyle, Alice St.(Ellis St),Stones Corner. Married to Harriet May Holmes 1 May 1902. Children were James William Henry Boyle b 19 Oct 1902 and Agnes Harriet Boyle b 1 Jan 1905. An amount of money from Queensland Patriotic Fund was sent to his widow in 1910. Monies had been sent previously to Esk. It is therefore assumed that he died 1910. I have searched the various places on the Internet, Qld State Archives, Cemetery Records and BDM with very minimal results as you can see. John B

    3. Hi There Listers, I am after some help with Gentlemen, who served in the middle East during second world war, I have two photo albums passed down to me from my grandfather, who had been given them during the war, One of them titled TO ANYBODY WHO WANTS THEM FROM JOHNY Egypt AIF 1941, The other TO ANYBODY WHO WANTS THEM FROM JOHNY Egypt 2nd AIF 1941, Inside there is the emblem of the AIF and in the corners 2/1- 2/2, 2/3 and the 16th bgd My grand father servered with both the 1st AIF and the 16th Battalion. And I do know that he was injured as my father also served in the middle east and still, tells me how he felt like it was him that had been shot. Most of the photos of people were Stan - that is my grandfather, Jack King, who was Philipino, William Blinkhorn,(from what I can gather Both Jack King and William Blinkhorn were from Queensland) Squissy, Doug, - An AIF Hospital and lables of Sister Night, Sister Elsworthy and sister couch but pictures missing. If anyone can help me with any information on any of these people or where I can find it, it would be much appreciated, thanks all Liz

All the detail I found relevant is on http://www.diggerhistory2.info/graveyards/pages/others/treasury-notes.htm Thanks to all concerned. Cheers, Ted Harris

    3. Hugo Throssell VC 10th Light Horse is buried in Karrakatta Cemetery W. Australia. He was the only member of the entire Light Horse to receive a VC despite the battle honours. Hugo Throssell's grave is a private memorial and is not under the auspices of the OAWG. I stop by regularly and clean his grave up, put poppies there on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. I don't have flowers in my garden (yet) so I cut roses out of the cemetery gardens and put them on his grave ;) I wrote a letter to Veteran's Affairs 16th June asking that the OAWG take care of it ... I thought they might at least make an exception to the rule in his case. How naive of me! I received a reply today. Vets Affairs through OAWG is COMMITTED to maintaining his memorial plaque in the Garden of Remembrance but do not have the statutory authority to care for his grave!!! However, Vets Affairs have notified the Heritage Council of the importance of his grave and suggest I consider taking it up with them!!! They can't look after heritage listed buildings in this state let alone Throssell's grave. It's buck passing at it's best. If I approach the Heritage Council they will say it's the National Trust that should look after it who in turn will say it's Karrakatta Cemetery's responsibility who will then say its the Army or 10th LH and who in turn will say its the Office of Australian War Graves. Hugo Throssell's grave is the only one of the VC winners buried in at Karrakatta Cemetery that the OAWG do not tend. Bright Blessings, Sandra. 1. RE: [AUS-MIL] A good question
    2. Peter Thomas
    3. Regarding the registration of deaths overseas, whilst on military service: whilst looking for an entry in the Index of South Australian deaths, I came across one entry for a death at Gallipoli in 1915. I thought this remarkable at the time. I have not seen any other comparable entries. My suspicion is that individual deaths overseas might find their way into the civil registers as follows: if the deceased left an estate that required to be administered promptly (leases to be signed; shares to be traded), the family would want to move quickly on probate. If, however, the local Registrar of Probates wasn't co-operative, regarding being satisfied as to proof of death; then perhaps the Registrar of BDM might be persuaded to issue his certificate, which would get over the hurdle. I am sure that somewhere in Commonwealth legislation there exists a facilitation of proof of the death of a soldier. But perhaps, especially in the early days, such as 1915, the situation wasn't so clear. Anyway, that's a theory to explain an unusual phenomenon. The Boer War is probably in a class of its own, because Federation didn't have much impact on those who participated. It will be interesting to see where the recent death in Iraq gets registered: I note that the inquiry into the death is being presided over by a NSW Coroner. 1. RE: [AUS-MIL] A good question
    2. Anthony Staunton
    3. John Thank you for this contribution. This is news to me. Firstly I would like to do a comparison with the known dead from South Africa and see how it matches up. It poses the question as to whether this was unique to New South Wales or some or all colonies registered deaths in South Africa. Most of the contingents that went to South Africa were state contingents so there were six different sets of rules. Your observation that some are in running rego numbers and others random is most interesting. "NO SURRENDER". Based on the date of death above I searched the Victorian Digger Federation BDM index and was unable to find a death in the name of Herbert John GOODMAN. So now I'm wondering if an Australian citizen died overseas while on active service was there a death certificate issued for that person and if so, by whom? I am keen to know this as I am attempting to find out who Herbert John GOODMAN's parent were. All I have so far is his marriage entry (see below) and although it says he was born in Benalla I've been unable to find same. Digger - Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836-1888 Surname: GOODMAN Given Names: Herbert John Event: M Spouse Surname/Father: MCMILLAN Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Anna Gillespie Age: Sex: M Birth Place: BENALLA Death Place: Year: 1881 Reg Number: 4546 Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. 1. Gallipoli money
    2. Ted HARRIS
    3. I have recently been given some great images of the English bank notes that were overprinted in Arabic so the troops at Gallipoli would have spending money when they reached Constantinople. I have one at http://www.diggerhistory2.info/graveyards/pages/others/photo04.htm but these are better and of both denominations; one pound and ten shillings. I have always known the basics of the arrangement but now I would like to add the fine details. Who was issued them, how much were they issued, were that a charge against the soldier's pay or a freebie. Can any one help please? Cheers, Ted Harris
