    2. Kevin
    3. Hi I have a photo of my father Maurice Neil WALLACE (1904-1977) in a uniform. I think it is an army uniform, but not sure. Looking for someone to have a look at the photo and tell me what they think. Cheers and Thanks Kevin

    2. Marilyn Kenny
    3. Dear Listers The answer is found- thanks to Allan Roderick who directed me to Bob Schwartz 's site Aviation Wings and Badges of World War II http://www.ww2wings.com/main.shtml. My uncle was indeed with 156 Sqd ,a Pathfinder who wore wings. Scans of these can be clearly seen on Bob's site and correspond with the blurry image visible on our enlarged photo Thanks for all the help MK

    3. Thank you George, yes, that is definitely my Michael PHELAN. Michael Patrick PHELAN was born in 1879 and his father`s name was John, and they were a Werribee family. Sadly, Michael Patrick`s son, Michael John PHELAN died at the hands of the Japs at Sandakan in 1945, he was 36 years old. George, thanks for what you have sent, it adds a little more to what I already know about Michael Patrick. I actually have a photo of him in his Boer War uniform which I find marvellous. 3. Dear Listers Could someone settle a dispute? Have a coloured photo of a relative who was RAAF -attached to RAF -Warrant Officer -Rear Gunner- Lancaster 156 SQD.This photo has recently been enlarged and it clearly shows that beneath his brevet patch and DFC ribbon there is a set of gold wings on top of his uniform pocket. It may be a patch ,may be a badge. Those in the know said that he should not be wearing wings as he was not a pilot.Someone who knows nothing of these things said it looks just like an eagle with wings outstretched The photo would have been taken in the UK between the award of the DFC in Nov 1943 and his death in a flying battle over Germany 23/12/43 Any suggestions as to what this might be Thank you Marilyn

    2. In the Boer War the mounted troops from Queensland wore emu feathers (later ostrich feathers, locally sourced). At that stage it was considered as a "Queensland thing" but NSW troopers wore black cock's feathers, Tasmanians wore wallaby fur puggarees and WA troopers wore eagle's feahers as a plume. None of those accoutrements were 100% official but they were accepted. Quoting aus-military-request@rootsweb.com: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. Edward "Tip" Broughton, full name Edward Renata Muhunga Broughton was in the New Zealand Army in the South African War (9th Contingent No 7277) & WWI Gallipoli & France (16/518). In WWII he joined the AIF in Melbourne. His father was a British farmer in Hawkes Bay near Hastings, and his mother was Maori. He put his age up for the Boer War (he was 16), and down for WWII. After joining the AIF in Melbourne, his age reduction (by 16 years) was discovered and he was eventually put in charge of the 8th Australian Employment Company. They were largely Jews from Germany, the 'Dunera Boys'. He died in Melbourne in 1955, and in September a ceremony at Melbourne's Fawkner Cemetery unveiled a new headstone to him. http://www.onlinecatholics.com.au/issue121/news1.php Yours, John Wilson
