Thanks Calvin, This would certainly fit for this man as although he gave his birth as 1891, it was actually 1887, but had served in World War I. Thanks everyone for their suggestions and assistance. I recently came across a reference that stared RAAF Vultee Vengeance bombers were withdrawn from operational service in New Guinea after a disasterous raid against Rempri by 58 Vengeances on 8 March 1944. Would anyone be able to provide further information or references to this raid. I am particularly interested in finding out how many 23 squadron aircraft were lost on the raid. Daryl Ward.
Mari, Could also mean Platoon D of 31 Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps. The VDC were the "Dad's Army" or Home Guard, whatever you want to call it and was originally made up from WW1 veterans who were to old to join up again and members of the RSL. Concerned townsfolk or those who were ineligible to fight overseas joined the ranks thereafter. Over 50,000 men were handed over to the Army in May 1941 to defend Australia. Thanks to all that answered. Entrenching is more in his line as a tunneller! Best wishes Jan Sydney
If the initials are after his name they could mean Surname- VD(Volunteers Decoration) CPT (Captain) D (first initial?) Formed in 1916, it was used a field depot for infantry. It functioned as a pioneer unit. Drafts from different battalion would join the entrenching battalion prior to joining their units. In this manner, reinforcements would acquire some experience at the front before being sent into battle. The battle of Pozieres caused the unit to be reduced to a cadre. Later the unit contained tunnelling reinforcements. It was disbanded in 1917. See Bean III: 177-178. It's unaccountably missing from the order of Battle. I will fix.

Hi Joy 56 Aust Inf Bn was part of 5 Aust Infantry Brigade throughout the war. They were mobilized at Bathurst, NSW in December 1941 and moved to Centennial Park, Sydney in March 1942. They moved to WA in July 1942 and camped at Melville, Bellevue and at Irwin Siding (near Minginew) before being stationed at Moonyoonooka (near Geraldton) from February to September 1943. They then camped at Wellington Dam, Swanbourne and Dandaragan before moving to Kairi on the Atherton Tableland inland from Cairns where they arrived in February 1944. They were disbanded on 6 June 1944. This is a summary of the database printout for this unit and if you are interested you could get a copy of the full listing of the unit's location at the end of each month during the war.
