As another Anzac Day passes can SKS please help me with the origins of the following: "Remember always how much you owe to them and try to do as much for the Empire in your own day as they have done in theirs." This series relating to Australians in various conflicts has not been able to be accessed for some time. I recently found that it is included in the web site Land Forces of Britain the Empire and Commonwealth (regiments.org). If you search in Australia and then Divisions you will find the series. Hope this is of help Vic.Swanson
I have looked at Peter Chausseaud's 'The Topography of Armageddon'. The book does include three extracts from the Ploegstreert 1/000 map (28SW4). Unfortunately none of these include the part of the map that you are interested in. You will need either a copy of the map or access to the Imperial War Museum CD-ROM of trench maps. The map reference reads; The sheet title - in your case 28 SW4 Then the 6000 yard square indicated by a letter ('8') then the 1000 yard square within the 6000 yard square given by a letter ('A') and within that square the reference is 5/10 along from west to east and 3.5/10 up from south to north. I do not know of an easy way to convert trench map references to latitude and longitude. It would be very useful if it could be done - we could have g.p.s. guided battlefield walks. Hope this helps Roger Beckett (in UK) -----Original Message----- From: Eldon R J (Don) Bryant [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 21 April 2003 11:57 To: [email protected] Subject: Fw: " WWI Map ref. Apply to the Maps Curator for a copy of the map referred to and then you can probably define the area by topographical details on another map with Long & Lat. Good Luck John
I am looking for information on the liberation of the POW's at Changi - in particular an incident when an American plane dropped bombs on the camp hitting a tank and killing men who were standing nearby. I need to find out the names of those men as one of them was my husband's grandfather. He had joined up under an assumed name and were it not for the fact that one of his brothers was also a POW at the time no one would have know what had happened to him Regards Lynette Rabbitt E-mail [email protected]

Hi 3 points on your quest 1) You are to be congratulated and supported on a HUGE task, possibly an impossible one 2) Please don't wait until you have all the ducks in a row before you publish. Many records have been lost or destroyed in floods and fires. Get a good grip on the subject and publish with updates as possible. If you wait to get it all you will never publish at all. 3) I know you have looked at Digger History but there is a page there that you might have missed. It records information prepared by the Australian Bureau of Statistics who have a very good record for accuracy. It is not complete in the sense that it does not break up into all the Units but it is a valuable tool. See it at http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-conflicts-periods/other/stats.htm Ted www.diggerhistory.info ----- Original Message ----- From: "vrswanson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 21, 2003 2:21 PM Subject: Land Forces of the Australian Colonies > I am seeking accurate information relating to the land military forces > raised by the Australian Colonies from 1788 to Federation. > > I have to date collected information from the following sources :- > Australian War memorial, Australians at War {series prepared by Steve > Conway}, Defending Victoria, Queensland Defence Forces, Digger History, "The > History of The Military Forces of South Australia" {Ref. I am seeking accurate information relating to the land military forces raised by the Australian Colonies from 1788 to Federation. I have to date collected information from the following sources :- Australian War memorial, Australians at War {series prepared by Steve Conway}, Defending Victoria, Queensland Defence Forces, Digger History, "The History of The Military Forces of South Australia" {Ref. Australian Army Journal 51 - August 1953}together from bits and pieces in various publications. Whilst they each provide some information they are often incomplete and accuracy is sometimes questionable. The information I am seeking is a complete list of the units raised, dates of raising and what happened to the unit. Some were disbanded, some absorbed into other units, some renamed and some of course are basically still in existence today. In other words I am trying to piece together the basic history of each and every unit. I also include in my quest the Naval Brigades which were also formed by the Colonies. Information about the Colonial Navies is readily available in various places including "Australian Colonial Navies" By Colin Jones.(AWM) Since I started my search I am surprised that I have not to date found any complete set of information for any of the states. I hope someone can help me in my search. Vic. Swanson
For those who have never looked at London Gazettes there is quite a lot of information about Australia Solders in WW1 in the magazines or at least ther eis in the copy we have at the Hornsby Shire Historical Museum. Listers might be glad to know that the London Gazette for the periods of WW1 and WW2 are now online at www.gazettes-online.co.uk My thanks to R G Crompton from the UK for the information Ted Harris www.diggerhistory.info
Dear Ted, I have the book "The March Of The Wallabies" by David H. Dial. If you like I will scan the pages with the itinerary and send them to you as an attachment. I had two uncles on the Kookaburras march from Tooraweenah to Bathurst in early 1916. Do you have anything on this march? All the best, Claude... Hi Everyone On Friday morning I head off for a pilgrimage to North Borneo and come back on Wednesday 30th April. I stay in Kuching for a few days then fly to Kota Kinabula (formerly Jesselton) where we have an Official Dedication Ceremony. Then by ferry to Labuan Island where we attend the Peace Park and Dedication at War Cemetery. Most of the 2500 Aussie and British POW's who died at North Borneo are now buried on the island although many do not have individual graves and have a special memorial with all their names recorded. We fly back to KK then another flight from KK to Sandakan (in Sabah) for a four day stay which includes an official city welcome, visit to Barhala Island, city tours, tour of POW campsites, Memorial Park, tour of Sepilok and a Dawn Service at the POW Camp on Anzac Day. After leaving Sandakan we travel overland to Ranau and enroute visit the areas of the Death March with dedications. We arrive at Kundasung (about 10,000 feet) and stay there two days. We view Mt Kinabalu, Jungle Walk, Pot Poring Hot Springs (a swim), tour orchid gardens and visit Kundasung Memorial Site with dedication. Twelve Days of real adventure in natural jungle with our theme to also honour our fallen POW soldiers from WW2. We will be taking many photos and am doing so for anyone who has a request for a particular location, memorial or grave site. I have a digital camera and it is no problem to take a photo for anyone with a specific interest. Regards.....Allan
