Thank you to everyone who answered my request about my deserter. Some of the answers offered the same information but I appreciated their time given to me Thank you all - Margaret
At the suggestion of a Lister I have changed the "What's New" page of Digger History. It is now handled in-house and not by an outside service provider. The new "What's New" page is http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-help/newspage.htm Ted www.diggerhistory.info
Laura McDuff asks; Re;...Unit: 3rd Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse (NSW) I understand they sailed for S/Africa in March and returned to Australia 11 August 1902. Did the battalion see any service in S.Africa? Yes but probably no action. In what ship did they sail? Sailed from Sydney on transport Manhattan on 1 April 1902. How long would it take from Perth to Durban by sea? Arrived Durban on 30 Apr 1902. Would the battalion have been too late to serve - Peace in May 1902? Were these men entitled to the King's South Africa Medal? No. Those not already awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal were awarded the Medal with one clasp. see page 176 of Murray Anthony Staunton

Listers with an interest in badges issued to para-military groups like the Civil Defence and ARP units in WW2 might be interested in the web page http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-badges/civilian4.htm A collector in the UK, a Mr Steve Risby, supplied the images. Ted www.diggerhistory.info

I have just been perusing my brother's Service records (World War II). He served with the RAN from 1941 - 1944, seeing action with the British Navy during much of that time. To my dismay I discovered that at least half of the records were taken up with notations about him being overpayed one pound five shillings and one pence. I am pleased to say that there was a notation mentioning that he had repaid the money! So much for his sacrifice to his country! Hilda.

Robert Not a stupid question - a very good one in fact. Only about 180,000 of about 400,000 files are presently specifically indexed on the system. I suspect what happened is that they started indexing from the beginning of the alphabet, and only got up to somewhere in the letter G before they ran out of time/money. They also appear to have done some of the very common names (like Smith) for which they would receive many requests. They also appear to add others as they receive requests for them. They are still adding names as the total number of files in the series keeps increasing from time to time. The file for your Mr O almost certainly exists - but you would have to contact the archives (and pay for it) to get the information. I have a newspaper cutting of a picture of a Trooper "W M Mills" a Sikh War Campaigner. I believe it is from a South Australian Paper as there are bits and pieces on the back of the cutting that refer to South Australia. I am pretty sure the picture is of a William Munson Mills who arrived in SA in 1879 and was born in Essex England about 1825. Would there be any information relating to William in relation to the Sikh War, or could anyone suggest where I could search next. Thanking you in anticipation. Ken Mills
