    3. Can any assist with Alexander Crawford of the 12th Regiment of Foot, variously listed as warden, constable. He married in Hobart in 1857 and although I have some biographical detail am anxious to locate the records of the 12th regiment - does anyone know where they are likely to be deposited. Alexander also served in Sydney and was back in Hobart in 1868. Cheers, Ted Harris

    1. Re: AUS-MILITARY Veterans
    2. Thank you for responding to my question and for the valuable information. I have begun making contacts concerning the Electoral Rolls and the Veterans organization/magazine. I had already received a wealth of info and documents from the Archives including copies of death certificates, grave site locations, birth and marriage info, etc. In addition I have copies of the full military records of my 2 cousins who served in WWII in the RAF including photos of them both. However you can not get info on people who may still be alive, or who were born, married, etc. after the 1950's, which is why I am thinking that the Veterans org or the Electoral rolls can give me current info on surviving family members that I can make contact with. Again, I want to thank you all. 3. Liz, To add to Anthony Staunton & Paul & Kathryn Lucas' messages, the NSW Branch of the RSL publishes the "Reveille" magazine which is sent to all sub- branch members every two months. See http://www.rslnsw.com.au/index.cfm?page=417. There is a "letters to the Editor" section which accepts submissions (less than 200 words). An appeal via that medium might work. The email address is statsec@rslnsw.com.au. I assume that the other states & territory branches have similar magazines. There is a list of all branch contacts shown on the site http://www.rsl.org.au/main.html. 1. finding veterans
    2. Anthony Staunton
    3. Liz There are a number of veterans' organisations, the biggest is the RSL. See http://www.rsl.org.au/ However, Australia has compulsory electoral enrolment and the Australian Electoral Commission issues microfiche rolls sometimes twice a year. There are separate microfiche rolls for each state and territory but they are in alphabetical order by state or territory. Australia has six states and two territories, a maximum of eight look ups. The microfiche have full names unlike the telephone directory that has name and initials. My bet is that Australia has a New York consul who may have a set of microfiche. Or you could e-mail info@aec.gov.au. If they cannot answer your request the should be able to indicate where in the United States you can find a set of microfiche. One would have thought that someone born in 1921 would have volunteered or been conscripted in 1940 or 1941 and served full time from 1942 until 1945. Does the family have any idea what Mr Charman did during the war. Did he have a trade or occupation that would have exempted him from full time service. Maybe Mr Charman served with the part time Volunteer Defence Corps whose records are not as well preserved as the records of the Australian Army. If Mr Charman served in the Volunteer Defence Corps he may have been eligible for two medals but he would have had to apply for them. Does the family have any other material other than the photo. Does the uniform give any clue as to his unit. Is there a colour patch on his shoulder? Have the others in the photo been identified and interviewed? Has there been a search for a service number. Australian Army personnel had two original service records, one record stayed in Australia and one travelled with the serviceman's unit. After the war the two records were reconciled and one copy is now at NAA and the other at DVA. So it would be extremely unlikely that both copies were lost. If Mr Charman served overseas with the Australian forces then the most likely reason service records cannot be found is that he served under an alias. If Mr Charman served in the islands for at least six months and was in the Army for at least eighteen months he would have eligible for four campaign medals. However, he would have had to apply for the issue of the medals and he may be one of thousands of Second World War servicemen who have never applied.

    3. Chris, I may be wrong, but I think that the story about burnt records is a complete furphy. War records were lost through record office fires in the UK, due to bombing , an the US through a mishap. The AWM have records for WW1 & WW2, the latter available only to next of kin of deceased veterans. There is a searchible Nominal Roll which gives name/ rank/ service No. etc. on line at http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/ . I could find no Victor Kenneth CHARMAN you might wish to have a look. 3. Hi All: Some British & American Army Records have been lost: British WWI Army records, about 60% of soldiers' (other ranks) records were lost by bombing in 1940, see: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=18 But the British WWI Campaign Medal Roll index is avaliable online. American Army & Air Force Records were lost in a 1973 fire at St Louis, Missouri (NARA, NPC). Some alternate sources are avaliable, see: http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/fire-1973.html But NOT British WWII records as suggested below, or Australian records (as far as I am aware) as suggested earlier Yours, John Wilson > Could it be the British Armed Services?. Could it be the British Armed Services?. Did I see on the list some time ago that records were destroyed during the Blitz and the remaining records, such as medal cards are damaged by smoke & water so that they are very fragile.Maybe the family lore has a ring of truth to some degree. Even assuming that he enlisted in Bathurst as early as 1941 he is a good age. Maybe he did enlist under an assumed name and age in which case you may have little chance of finding him unless you have some of his papers or a letter from that period with a Unit postmark or his Serial number on the inside of a kitchen cabinet (as I found).People on this list are great at finding the obscure so post a scan of the photo and you might get lucky IDing the uniform or patches.Worth a try if you have that wall and can't find him on the ww2roll. Don't forget to try different spelling when searching the index in case it was mistranscribed and try the RAAF as well as the navy in case he moved between them(may never have been known to happen but that brick wall has to come down.)
