    3. Thanks everyone for your input, it has answered my questions. I guess my uncle isn't aware of the name and service number on them as I think he has them in a bank box. Many thanks again. 2. J. David Grierson
    3. People, A C J Pelling is listed in the Roll of Honour, 2/24 Btn, Killed in Action or died of wounds. In Major Bob Serle's history of the battalion, on 9 October 1943, 2/24th were mopping up after the battle for Lae. Of course, Pvt Pelling may have been wounded long before then, and there is no indication that he served in North Africa. However, the bottom line is that any medals held by the family which are attributable to him will have his name and service number inscribed on the rim (in the case of medals) or the back (in the case of stars). 3. Karen Does your Nan know which unit he was with. For example if he was with the 6th, 7th or 9th Divisions in North Africa that would be one star plus the WWII star. As he was killed in PNG he would also have the Pacific Star. He could have been with conscripts that went to PNG, so they would have been with other Divisions. If he is buried in Port Moresby, I can only assume he was killed in the Buna and Gona campaigns and brought back to Port Moresby. So what your Nan can tell you where he was will help your to sort out which are his medals. 3. A Military Medal issued during WW1 would have carried an image of George V. while one issued during WW2 would have carried an image of George VI. George V reigned from 6 May 1910 to 20 June 1936. George VI reigned 11 dec 1936 to 6 Feb 1952. Medals issued during the reign of George V carried his image and the inscription: GEORGEIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP Military Medals awarded during WW2 carried an image of George VI and the inscription: GEORGEIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX ET INDIAE IMP This was changed for the Korean War and the new inscription read: GEORGEIVS VI DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF Daryl Ward

    3. Hi All, Is anyone able to tell me if my Grandfather had any medals, his name is Alfred Charles James Pelling he was a private and fought and died in ww2 and is burried in Bomona War Cemetery, Port Morseby, Papua New Guniea. He only had one child, my mum, she was born a couple of months before his death, though a good thing is he did get leave and did get to hold his daughter on the day of her birth before he was shipped back., Nan tells me this is something that wasn't done in those days, but she was happy they made exceptions for him. Nan showed me a letter that he had sent her a couple of days before he died. Dated 30/09/1943, Jim asked for things like vegemite & soap .Its a lovely letter and I can understand why nan has had it hidden in a shoe box under her bed for more then 60 years. Unfortunately Jim (my Grand dad) was one of those people that may be alive today had things not been as gung ho as they were in the war days, but thats the way it goes. Thanks Karen

    3. I do not know about the Australian Military but both my General Service Medals(Naval General Service Arabian Peninsula) and General Service Medal(Borneo), are inscribed with my Rank, Name and Number Other medals I hold(Cadet Forces Medal) and my Grand dads 1st World War Medal are also inscribed. I would have thought Australia would have followed a similar policy of honouring the "winner" of a Campaign Service Medal therefore inscribing the rim of the medal Roger Royal Marines Member RMHS Researching Copelin, Attrell, Reeves, Deacon & Pont

    3. Just another question if the Military Medal had George V on it would that have been presented to a recipient during the 2nd War. Cheers Carol

    3. I note the responses of others. Invariably, the recipient of an MM would be entitled to campaign and other medals. The maximum value of the set is obtained by keeping them together, rather than by separating them. The reverse of a "bulk discount", you might say. Indeed, some would say the value of one medal is diminished by the absence of its companions. Sorry but this is all I have to go on !!!!! Any suggestions would be great Oh she said she sold it to a dealer who must have paid a reasonable sum she apparently need money fairly quickly. 3. Carol The Military Medal. A reasonable sum for a Second World War Military Medal would start at $12000 to $15000.
