Hi Elaine, Don't give up on ranked searches. You can set the programme so that it only shows four star matches (ie those that are close to your exact guidelines). I have stumbled across a number of ancestors using ranked searches.... one in particular because the fellow in question had had his name copied incorrectly onto a census.. spelled Hall instead of Hull. Exact searches are fine if your ancestors stayed put, were literate enough to spell their names correctly and didn't fib about where they were born and how old they were! Ranked searches are helpful for the brick walls!
