Hi Chris, My Doyle family arrived on the Afghan 1879 in NSW, but are listed on PROV as having arrived in Melb, this was because the ship stopped there first, but they did not disembark and continued onto Sydney, so for ages I searched for them in the wrong State, also, one child was listed on the original passenger list (I managed to obtain a copy of this from their departure in London) and it stated her name was Charlie, but PROV listed her as Mary, her birth record states Mary Agnes, so maybe you could search other States for his arrival and also check the passenger list again looking for name variations. Gabbe is not a common name, maybe he was related to Clare and Marie Gabbe, same ship, dates etc, have you tried a quick search on them following their arrival in Victoria ? Just a thought !!!
