Hello. At some time in the early 1930's my uncle John David Robinson b. 1909 England, went to prison somewhere in Melbourne. He lived in the St Kilda area. He and his wife are dead, they have no family. Is there any way I can find out what he did? By 1937 he was in WA, presumably to make a fresh start. Any ideas where I might look would be appreciated. I am in UK. Yours Noelene Cummins.
Have a look at the PRO Vic site http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/ and go in through the "access the collection" link from the list on the left. Then, click on the underlined link "digitised records and online indexes" and scroll through. There is a set about male and female prisoners.. I think they cover the period you are looking for. You will need to get someone to get the records for you, pay for copying, and post them to you as the PRO does not do research, look ups etc. You SHOULD be able to get the whole record of his time as a prisoner, photos or descriptions etc. I think you will find he went to Pentridge in those times, but it is a guess. I say "SHOULD" because my gg grandfather has a prison record in the late 1860s - but although the PRO has the records they will not allow anyone to see them as they are in such shocking condition - and have not yet (I have been asking for about three years) got them filmed or otherwise copied despite them saying it is about the highest priority project. I very seldom go to the PRO so am not offering to do the search etc for you but there are some on the list who go every few days it seems.
