For those of us who have subjects who were shall we say guests of her majesty's prisons (in Victoria) and are using any of the indexes available such as Marion Button's Female Prisoners 1855 - 1918 Index and Male Prisoners Index 1855 - 1900 or the prison indexes available on the PROV web site, my advice is to check both indexes regardless of your subject's gender.
