When I am staying interstate, I use the Needitnow website. http://www.needitnow.com.au/needitnow/needitnow.asp You can choose your price range, your location, and check the facilities and pictures of the accomodation on the website. I've used it a couple of times, once in Hobart and once in Sydney, and it works ok for me. It's hard to recommend accommmodation in Melbourne when I never stay in any.
