    3. Dear List - For our forthcoming newsletter, the Brighton Cemetorians Inc. are researching the name Weigall, one of the many branches of the a'Beckett family in Victoria. To even attempt to make sense of the a'Beckett family tree is fraught with danger and requires a good dose of Bex. The two Victorian branches of the family were (Sir) William (1806-69), first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and his brother Thomas Turner (1808-92). I am interested in hearing from anyone who may be researching any of the following surnames, all linked to the two (Victorian) a'Beckett brothers. A third brother, Arthur (1812-71) is the Sydney branch, who are mostly buried at Rookwood cemetery. Surnames are: a'Beckett Backhouse Boyd Chase Chomley Klingender Weigall One of my aims is to establish all the Melbourne Cemeteries that contain descendants of the a'Beckett family. At the moment, these are: Melbourne General Brighton The Necropolis Springvale Fawkner Berwick St. Kilda Thanks for Lois Comeadow for putting together a family tree of the a'Beckett surname. 1. Backhouse surname
    2. Peter Thomas
    3. One of the founders of the Society of Friends (a.k.a. Quakers) in Hobart in the 1830s, their first Meeting in Australia, was James BACKHOUSE (1794-1869), of York. JB was then a widower, and left his children in England. I believe that JB returned to England and lived out his days there. His fellow missionary, G. W. WALKER, returned to Hobart, married, became prominent, had a family which prospers to this day. I have often wondered if the Australian BACKHOUSEs were connected to this JB. There are several biographies of him (see ADB vol 1, p45; and OATS, Wm N.: "Backhouse & Walker" 1981), and he published several works himself, including "A Narrative of a Visit to the Australian Colonies" (1843; reprinted 1967). I mention this in case you come across any connections to York &/or Quakers.
