You could try the Hamilton Historical society - they used to be in the main street (Gray St) but haven't been there for many years. Don't know if they have an online presence - Google it. Have you tried any Victorian PO directories for the years after his arrival - assuming you have confirmed that via the passenger lists? Maybe online but if not your State Library should have them and your State Genealogy society may have them.
