    1. [AUS-MELBOURNE] My MAXWELL family tree
    2. Tony Maxwell
    3. Hi Listers I wonder whether anyone can help? My Great uncle Edward Maxwell, born1827 in East Ham Essex, came to Australia about 1852 on the Holyrood, I believe, his wife Margaret Jane Maxwell (Married in UK) arrived later. They had two kids in Australia, Anne Maxwell in June 1855 in North Melbourne and Emma in June 1857 in East Melbourne. Edward Maxwell died 6 Feb 1861 in a Melbourne hospital having fallen from his horse a week earlier. A letter indicates that his wife Margaret Jane Maxwell could have been pregnant when her husband died. What I am looking for is any info on what happened to Margaret Jane Maxwell, Anne Maxwell and Emma Maxwell after 1861. Any help would be appreciated. Regards to all Tony Maxwell

    3. Jan I checked the pioneer and the Federation index and there does not appear to be any sign of him after the birth of a child in 1867. I tried variations as well as the inquest disc. The youngest child was born in Colac. Have you tried where Elizabeth was born, maybe he is buried with her. 3. Dear all A short note to let you know that I have uploaded many more headstones to the Rokeby (formerly Clarence Plains) Anglican Cemetery in southern Tasmania. There are still more to come, but I am now most of the way through. Anyone with an interest in Morrisby, Free, Chipman, Calvert, Luckman, may find an ancestor or two. Certainly the site is worth exploring if you are interested in pioneers who were relocated from Norfolk Island. 3. Hello, I have had wonderful help from this list which has enabled me to put a family together and get in touch with a descendant who knew little of the early history.   In the process I am missing two members of the family, does anybody have the indexes for Melbourne General Cemetery ??   Elisha or Elija Fletcher THIBOU b. Antigua 1834 William Blanoke(Blanche) Flower THIBOU b. Antigua 1853   They both arrived 1855, both alive 1867, William dead 1877, Elisha I am not sure. I have scoured Newspapers, BMD's @ Record Office, Archives etc. maybe they have been mis-transcribed with another version of the name.   Any thoughts most welcome,   Toni

    3. Using the "Book" search on Google can turn up some useful historical Australian publications. I was looking for info on Victoria's 'Caledonia Goldfield' and use that as a search term and the 1866-67 directory was included in the list of search results. If you do a search yourself be sure to click on the "Full Text" option in the left margin of the results page, this will then show you the results for books and magazines that are fully readable online. 1. [AUS-MELBOURNE] Will from 1902 re land/premises at Wattletree Road Malvern - DUNN, BEATIE, SMITH, WHITEFORD - Query on records available and where I might locate them
    2. Perplexed
    3. Hi all I downloaded a copy of my great grandfather's will (James Whiteford 1902) and the probate document from the PROV site and had a couple of queries on which I was hoping to get assistance. The probate document lists land and property he owned at Glenferrie St Malvern. The land also bordered on Wattle Tree Road Malvern. The probate document references a shop, occupied by H Beamsley, a shop occupied by C Dunn and Co and a a shop and room occupied by Garrett and Plaisted. His daughter Louisa Isabella had married a Dunn so C. Dunn and Co may have included relations. The probate document mentions the size of the land he owned and rented out but not the street numbers. It also mentions a brick villa called "Stronvar" let to a Mrs Mina Brooke also fronting onto Wattle Tree Road. The Whiteford family separately had further land and a house fronting onto Wattle Tree Road in which James's widow and his daughter and her family lived. The assistance I am seeking is advice on records I might be able to look up to find more details of the various properties James held and the businesses to which he rented his premises. These will help me fill out details of the family. I assume, but am not sure, that these could include rate rolls, local council historical records, business records for the companies/people James rented his property to and any other records listers might be able to advise me of. The probate document includes various "Municipal valuations" for the land and properties as well as separate valuations by E.J. Dixon and Sons. I would be pleased to receive advice about what sources might be available I am planning to travel to Melbourne in September. I will only have a Friday and Saturday for research and want to maximise my time there as much as possible. I want to get out to the Cemetery to take photos of the family gravestones. The family members are buried at St Kilda. The probate document notes his daughters at the following addresses - Margaret Beattie of Seymour Ave Malvern, Mary Jane (Kate) Smith of Buckely St Footscray and Louisa Isabella Dunn of Wattle Tree Road Malvern. I would also be interested in finding information about their premises. The land at Wattle Tree Road was sold after his wife's death in 1910 or so. I have a copy of a clipping from The Argus noting that the land sold for a then record price of 100 punds per square foot. Pity they didn't keep it in the family. I'd be very pleased to get suggestions for records it would be worth searching for prior to my travel so I can prioritise what I will see. Other references I've found. There's a reference to a Minnie Whiteford, possibly the daughter in law of James or his granddaughter, both called Minnie, in an appendix to the City of Yarra Review of Heritage Precincts 2007 (Appendix 7) Municipal Rates Books found here http://yarracity.vic.gov.au/Planning/Strategic%20Planning/pdf/c85/Appendix%207.pdf and includes a couple of references I'd appreciate advice on where these rates books are held and if they are viewable by the general public. Thanks all for advice. Anne

    3. Hello Toni, It would be interesting to see if there were multiple child deaths in Robert's siblings or in the families of surviving siblings, or in his parent's families. A friend had several generations on the female line, where the boys all died very young, the girls survived and the same pattern in their families. That was a disease where the female was the carrier. But as your Robert married twice, the chances of two women being carriers seems a fairly remote chance, so it would have to be a different hereditary disease to the one afflicting my friend's family, and able to be transmitted by the male. I'm ignorant of hereditary diseases in general. 3. Hello to all, I would like to thank everybody for their wonderful help with THIBOU & JARRATT families which I have managed to put together. Being interested in DNA from the genealogy perspective I am wondering about these two families Robert JARRATT who married Olivia GAMON (my side) and Robert he then married Sarah Inglefield THIBOU and here is why ........ Robert and Olivia had 8 registered children 6 died in infancy, 2 married one dying age 29 (possibly in childbirth) and one living to a good age but no children. Robert then marr Sara THIBOU and had 10 children 9 dying in infancy the tenth died at age 22 from complications to a back street abortion. At first I thought this was perhaps the result of childbirth in early days in Victoria 1853 - 1877 but got to wondering "through" the night maybe it was genetic. Such a sad story, Regards Toni

    2. Carmel M Reynen
    3. With registration came compulsory innoculation for babies, many believed the immunisation for small pox gave children typhus as there was suddenly a breakout of that disease. They did not realise that it was not the immunisation that caused it but they had gotten rid of the small pox so it gave typhus a better hold. I believe either way the child was going to get something. But this is why people did not register their children.
