To those patient people who asked about a period of death for Ena and Jack O'Brien all I can tell you is that they were married in 1938 so maybe in the 1970's at a guess. Ena was a Schinkel before she was married. Sorry I can't be more helpful, don't go to any trouble though, it is only a long shot. Dennis

Hi Rod, If you can get hold of a copy of this book titled - "Bearbrass: Imagining Early Melbourne" by Robyn Annear, http://books.google.com.au/books?id=T30wBB5kPN0C&pg=PR12&dq=book+bearbrass&hl=en&ei=K1lATILoE4_CcafPrNUP&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CC4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=book%20bearbrass&f=false you will get a good idea of what Melbourne was like in those early days. Although it deals mainly with the time period before your ancestors arrival (that is, from the founding of Melbourne up to the goldrush years) it is well written, full of useful information and gives a good impression of what the place was like back then. The information Steve has provided is correct but I'd like to add that if your ship anchored in Hobson's Bay in 1855 it is possible that your people travelled up the Yarra by steamer. By 1855 paddle steamers and screw steamers had been in use on the Yarra and in Port Phillip Bay. Cheers, Barry Howard, Victoria, Australia. Hi Rod They may have landed at Williamstown, but more likely to have disembarked at Sandridge ( now Port Melbourne) Depending on their finances they could have caught the train to Melbourne then horse drawn transport to South Yarra, or if they were like a lot of the early population they might have walked! By 1855 Melbourne was nearly 20 years old and as a result of the Gold Rush had some surprising grand buildings, both private and public Have a look at this Web Site http://www.cv.vic.gov.au Type in Early Melbourne, or Sandridge in the search box and follow you nose, there are some very interesting photographs and stories, I was surprised just how much Melbourne had developed in such a short time. Hope this helps Steve At 09:26 PM 16/07/2010, you wrote: >I'm interested in what it was like for immigrants arriving in >Melbourne in October 1855. My Great uncle Edward Maxwell, born1827 in East Ham Essex, came to Australia about 1852 on the Holyrood, I believe, his wife Margaret Jane Maxwell (Married in UK) arrived later. They had two kids in Australia, Anne Maxwell in June 1855 in North Melbourne and Emma in June 1857 in East Melbourne. Edward Maxwell died 6 Feb 1861 in a Melbourne hospital having fallen from his horse a week earlier. A letter indicates that his wife Margaret Jane Maxwell could have been pregnant when her husband died. What I am looking for is any info on what happened to Margaret Jane Maxwell, Anne Maxwell and Emma Maxwell after 1861. Any help would be appreciated.
