For those of us who have subjects who were shall we say guests of her majesty's prisons (in Victoria) and are using any of the indexes available such as Marion Button's Female Prisoners 1855 - 1918 Index and Male Prisoners Index 1855 - 1900 or the prison indexes available on the PROV web site, my advice is to check both indexes regardless of your subject's gender. I kid you not I found my Elizabeth SCOTT in the Male Index!!! Cheers Anne -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Hi all - I am trying to find a daughter of a Frank Edward TIMMS who died in Melbourne in 1923. She married a Percy Charles LEVETT (alias Alfred COOK) in Melbourne in 1917 but then seems to have disappeared. No trace in the Vic death records to 1985. I am getting desperate - so I thought that the will of her father might help - if there is one. Can any kind soul help out with a quick search of the Vic probate index for Frank? I would be happy to do a Tasmanian lookup in return. Regards Eddy Steenbergen, Hobart, Tasmania.

Dear List Members - The Brighton Cemetorians have just released Issue 3 of our newsletter 'The Cemetorian'. Of interest is the feature article on William George Robertson (1854-1910) who drowned 8 miles outside Port Phillip Heads whilst onboard HMS Yarra on 10 December 1910. The article includes a family tree and lists surnames: ROBERTSON (Liverpool and St. Kilda), LOCKE (Essendon/Moonee Ponds), HUDSPETH, SEMMENS, MILNE, HERMAN, MORGAN, CONRICK, CAMERON, WORCESTER and COLLIER. We have launched 'The William & Lily Robertson Appeal' with the aim of raising $A400.00 for a bronze memorial plaque on Robertson's grave. Our research indicates that Lieut-Engineer Robertson was the first casualty of the Commonwealth Naval Force (the forerunner of the RAN). Anyone interested in joining the Brighton Cemetorians can visit our website http://www.brightoncemetorians.org. All supporters receive a free copy of the newsletter by email. It's free to join. We are also happy to undertake research requests for any person having difficulty locating a grave at the cemetery. Details are also contained on our website. Kind Regards Travis M. Robyn There is always something that is new in genealogy I think that is what keeps our interest. sometimes however it is good to be able to brainstorm even when you think, I should have thought of that. Just glad all of our hints may have contributed to the find. Hi listers, Robyn of Geelong here. I think I'm losing the plot, I've had so much info sent to me over the last few days! I've managed to sort most of it out and now I have a whole new family to research and this is where the fun really starts. But getting back to my original request, I have to report that the mystery lady in the grave seems not to be a mystery any more! It looks like Mary Reed/Robinson/Jackson married AGAIN to a William Burdett, although no marriage entry has been found to date. They may have even married interstate. Now I'm on the hunt for a death for Wm Burdett. Then Ray stepped in and did some asking at the Melb Cem for me, and he and Gina (from the Cem) came forth with extra info on the burial. Mary Burdett was the owner of the plot. And as the person who signed the burial papers for Mary was Mary's son Joseph Jackson, I then asked Ray to have a search for Joseph to see if and when he married ( just because I wanted to know more about him).... and here the plot thickens! I have Joseph's will and there is no wife mentioned, but Ray came up with a wife (but no marriage yet!) and a family of 9 kids! In between Ray getting info to me, others have chipped in and given me info, clues and suggestions....all very much appreciated! One would think I was a novice at this game, but I have been researching for about 20 years, and this was one of those 'problem' families that I put off delving into... until now! So right now I must express my sincere 'thank you' to; Ray, Gina, Sherrie, Evelyn, Carmel, Bernadette, Colleen, Jessie, Beryl, Marita and Peter. You are all very generous people, and on a top list to boot. My apologies to anyone I may have missed, but I have been keeping tabs :)
This is even more interesting as I found that Jane Isabella"s Father was James Ginley Mitchell that's on her Death record so it gets even more confusing by the day. Nor could I find Walter Leslie's Birth registration last night but then it was very late and I was tired I could have missed it. So where did the Surname "Mitchell" come from? Hi Carmel & Robyn, Hee Hee... I have a couple of those '1st child' birth certificates. The parent's gave an exact details of 'when & where' they were married... If you are really desperate to find this marriage you could send for the child's birth certificate as the date and place of marriage should be on it, that is if they are telling the truth. Hi Robyn, Not sure if this was mentioned in a previous post, but on one of Joseph & Jane's children's birth rego.'s (Walter Leslie 1893) Jane's maiden name is given as 'Grinley'. So looking at the Vic BDM's from 1836-1888 - I found this marriage... Digger - Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836-1888 Surname: GRINLY Given Names: Jane Isabella Event: M Spouse Surname/Father: THOMAS (b.Prahan) Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: John Age: Sex: F Birth Place: NEW ZEALAND Death Place: Year: 1886 Reg Number: 1796 Denomination: Parish: Fiche: As you can see it mentions Jane was born in NZ Perhaps Thomas died or they separated. Thomas & Jane have a Mary Thomas in 1887 Fitzroy. Okeydokey... found Jane's death... Digger - Death Index. Victoria 1921-1985 Surname: JACKSON Given Names: Jane Isabella Father: Mitchell Jas Grinley Mother: Unknown UNKNOWN Death Place: FCRAY Age: 70 Age Code: Year: 1935 Reg Number: 3855 Event: D Take a pick as to what Jane's real maiden name was. :) I looked for a second marriage under Grin*, but no luck. It's possible Joseph & Jane didn't marry. Perhaps Jane's death certificate may shed some light. Kind regards, Sherrie. Hi listers, does anyone have Melb Trade directory/ies who would be so kind as to have a look for Joseph JACKSON, who was a cigar maker from c1896 to 1934? With that length of time at the same job, I'm wondering if he had his own shop/business... probably in inner Melb, as he lived in the Collingwood/Carlton areas. Any help appreciated, Robyn of Geelong.
