William HAIME married Christian CUNNING in 1851. Christian died in 1862 and is buried in Woodend Cemetery. In 1863, William married Anna Morgan William is also buried in Woodend. Is anyone researching this name? Cheers, Bob
Hello. I am searching re Mary GAYLE, a widow. who married Andrew Erskine CUNNING circa 1855. Mary was a Grocer in Melrose St. North Melbourne. Mary was a Miss MEDDLECUT and married a GAYLE. Then when widowed she married Andrew. She and Andrew owned 8 single fronted houses in the street, some of which are still there. I have much data and photos re CUNNING, which I would be happy to share with anyone researching the same line. Cheers, Bob.

Hello listers, I have just launched a web site that lists a few of the men (and their families) who registered with the Melbourne Labour Bureau in June and July 1892. Many of the men came from interstate, particularly New South Wales and South Australia. Adelaide suffered from a depression long before Melbourne did, due to an extended drought. Many men involved in the building industry came to Melbourne to find employment but their numbers swelled just when the building industry was on the verge of collapse. Some of the men went back to their home states (or the home state of their spouse), while others found other alternatives such as a life on the land in one of the settlement schemes such as Village Settlements. I am attempting to list and identify all 4000 of the men who registered as unemployed in Melbourne. My web site also lists spouses and children, but currently only around 100 of the men are listed. If you have a male family member who went AWOL for a while, or a child who was inexplicably born in Melbourne in the early 1890s when most of his siblings were born in another state, please visit the site regularly as I'll be uploading more names weekly. This is a work in progess that will be the basis of my PhD research so appreciate any feedback or assistance that researchers can give. Please copy the link and paste it into your browser. Hi Lenore, Thank you for your information. I have seen the passenger list entries for the Broadhurst family and learned that Peter had been born in Cheshire - a great leap forward. I'm most interested in your web page and also in Nick Vine's book. The idea of being systematic about family research is one of those common sense ideas that completely passed me by. (I'm glad you can't see my study!) I visit the family history section of the NSW State Library regularly and often stand there thinking 'so much information, wish I had a clue what I was doing'. I actually once found an ancestor literally because the fellow sitting next to me got up and left the book he was reading open on the table. It was called 'Exiles to Port Phillip' and I noticed a familiar name on the open page. I traced my 'Exile' back to York and found his father was also a convict! I figured my neighbour in the library must have been the genealogist's equivalent to the tooth fairy. Once again, thank you for your ideas and assistance. Hi Maureen, I presume you are aware that there are passenger lists for most ships arriving in Australian ports, kept by the Archives Office for each state, and in Victoria that is the Public Record Office Victoria. Some indexes are already online on their website. The passenger lists themselves are on microfilm at PROV, and you would need to visit or pay a researcher to look at them for you, and photocopy those lists. The information on the lists varies, but the can sometimes tell you where the immigrant went after leaving the ship, so worth looking at. To see if there are any accounts of the voyages in which you are interested, you need to consult "Log of Logs". I have a description of this on my webpage http://members.optushome.com.au/lenorefrost/shipslog.html I'd also recommend a visit to a library to borrow a book on the basics of family history research in Australia. Nick Vine Hall's book describes what sort of records are available and where to find them. It is much better to be systematic about family history than trying to pick up information ad hoc on the net. Best wishes, Lenore Frost Essendon, Vic

Hello Carmel, Excuse my ignorance but have just realised the info I have is from the UNasssisted passenger list. Peter Broadhurst arrived on the 'Bombay' in December 1852 accompanied by his wife Caroline (nee Fleming) and children: Louisa 10 yrs, Frances 7 yrs, Emily 4 yrs and William 2 yrs. They had a child, Amelia, born on voyage in the Bay of Biscay. I know he married in London, St Pancras. I have his marriage cert which confirms his occupation as a carpenter and names his father as Thos Broadhurst, carpenter. I have his death cert which leaves unanswered questions. He died in 1867 in Ballarat of 'epilepsy congestion of the brain' after a six day illness. The informant is a 'friend' who seemed to be confused about his family. His children are named but his wife is listed as his mother(?) leading me to think that the informant didn't know him too well. Wife is listed as unkown. His profession is confirmed as a carpenter. I have his wife's death certificate. She died in 1874. My grandmother is 92. She is descended from him via Amelia (and also from John Dunlop the gold discoverer). I remember her showing me Peter Broadhurst's diary when I was a child but of course I wasn't that interested then (how I kick myself now!). Apparently another member of the family has it but she cannot remember who, just that it was published at one time in a Melbourne newspaper around the 1960's. I know his diary made reference to another family on board who lost a child and he was very distressed by it. He and his wife must have befriended another family on board by the name of Hull. Their son James was born in Port Phillip and he married Amelia Broadhurst - hence my presence! Such small snippets of info and such big holes! I was just hoping to find some 'lists' of arrivals. Cheers Maureen I have been trying via the lists and other avenues to contact family in Melbourne but have turned up nothing of interest. The info I read in 'The Somerset Years' made me wonder if there was a source of 'arrivals' history that I was unaware of. Hi All, Today I came across a wonderful book called 'The Somerset Years'. I have heard of it before but had not previously found it anywhere. I was so delighted to read about many of the ships that arrived in Port Phillip as a lot of my ancestors arrived on them. Names include BRUTON - on the 'Constance' , BROADHURST & HULL 'Bombay' , ABBEY 'Mohammed Shah' , BISSET 'Australia'. The book includes notes about certain passengers aboard each ship. (presumably those from Somerset). Would anyone know where these details could be found? None of mine were from Somerset and I have almost no details of what they did after they arrived in Victoria (except for info found in the BDMs). I have heard from other family members that Peter BROADHURST who arrived on the Bombay actually kept a diary that was published in a Melbourne Newspaper. As I live in Sydney, I would welcome any ideas on how to go about finding information. Kind regards Maureen
