    3. Hi Lynn What a queue they would have joined. My GGG Grandfather Thomas Jennings left Melbourne in 1843 and spent £36,000 trying to prove he was an heir, unsuccessfully. His father had an older brother anyway so I don't know how he thought he should have been in the queue. Have you read Bleak House by Charles Dickens? It is based loosely on 'The Great Jennens Case' The guy who received the bulk of it was from the wrong branch of the family and was illegitimate, as was later discovered. So there were more court cases. I think it was proved that it had gone to the wrong person, but as there was no money left by then, (it was supposed to have been in trust), it was all rather pointless, unless you were a solicitor. (nearby to Shepparton) ARAT is Ararat, also country Victoria, FITZ is Fitzroy is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria I think Newport is a suburb of Geelong, Victoria, STKI is short for St.Kilda, which is a seaside suburb of Melbourne. 3. I am trying to fit the final part into a jig saw puzzle and hope that you may be able to help. I can give you the following information My great granmother born 5.10.1871 Mary henderson left England on the Macquarie bound for Sydney on 5.9.1985 the voyage was to last 104 days.(we have ships passenger list for this voyage) She was accompanied by her brother Robert Henderson. They took up residence around melbourne. She was a trained musician from the Royal academy and the possibility was she mixed with a musical/bohemian group in the area. It is believed she had a relationship with a man called Allen James Lindsay or James Allen Lindsay* (see below) and as a result my grandfather Hamilton Lindsay was born 12 April 1900 at Riddells Creek (we have the birth registration) bu there is no father's name on certificate. My granmother returned to England with Hamilton Sept/Oct 1901 on SS Rome - have not traced the ships passenger list - I traced a man called Allen J Lindsay 33 years in 1903 who travelled toEngland on the SS Persic arriving at Tilbury 13.10.03. * The man James Lindsay Allen aged 30 years occupation gentleman address given as George hotel S Kilda but usual address Healsville? birthplace St Oban, Scotland. He married a woman Mabel Jelfs 22 years born Melbourne, spinster musician of 46 Grieve Street St Kilda. Father's name Joseph Jelfs, mothers maiden name Sarah Howie. The marriage took place at St Judes Church, Carlton, Melbourne March 30 1901 Regisre No 324 @ St Judes. I wonder if there is any way of checking any of this information, such as address books/trade directories etc? 2. Lenore Frost
    3. Hi Lis <snip> >Does anyone know of a way to search probate records for the >Beneficiaries of a Will rather than the name of the person who left the >Will? No, except curiously in South Australia. I suppose you are familliar with the 'SA WILLS BENEFICIARIES INDEX' by JACKSON Roxanne Jackson? Of course, it would only apply to Wills proved in South Australia - but if the deceased owned land in South Australia, there would have had to have been some Probate action there as well, so it is an outside chance. Ditto Queensland. But the fact that William Warwood came to Melbourne suggests that the main action respecting Probate took place in Melbourne. I'd be guessing that the deceased had retired to reside in Melbourne and his solicitors were in Melbourne. (Though Warwood I suppose might have disembarked in Melbourne to train it to Sydney or Brisbane, but without further knowledge, I guess you'd start by assuming that the main Probate was done in Melbourne.) >Does anyone know how I could access the probate records from South >Australia where I live? They're not digitised, so apart from the index, you'll have to come to Victoria to look at the papers yourself or pay a researcher. But you haven't got to that stage yet. >Does anyone have any suggestions on how else I might establish who the >person was who left his estate to Diana? Seeing you know that the deceased had relatives in South Australia, I'd be concentrating on them. Turn them over with a fine tooth comb. Look at every land deal of theirs, in case there was a transfer from the deceased person to a Simm (or other name that you know). Check all their obituaries in case one says something like "came out to join his uncle in (somewhere) to jackeroo, but later came to South Australia". Check all the girls' wedding notices, in case one of them mentions a gift from an uncle/cousin whatever - you'll have to investigate all the names, some of them will be friends and neighbours, but he might have sent a cheque. Wedding gifts are often listed in newspaper stories about weddings. Check all their death notices in case one of them was inserted by the deceased person. As we like to say in genie circles, work from the known to the unknown. You know the relations in South Australia, so that will be the section of Mrs Warwood's family where the relative belonged, one would assume. He might have even been present and witnessed a marriage or a burial. Mind you, if the story is true that the deceased had a few aboriginal wives at the time of his death, it doesn't sound like he was living in Melbourne after all. Best wishes, Lenore Frost Essendon, Vic

    2. Thanks very much Carmel ! Sorry, I can't get the gist of the 2nd part of your reply. "Here are" should that have been "There are"? as you haven't listed any others. The Tom bit might be misleading especially if the possible Tom wasn't the first man - who left from Melbourne. I just had a look and can't find an uncle Tom on the Jennings side for the old relative who told mum years ago. (mum thinks it was Tom - many years ago!) I wanted to know if there were many murders around 1920+ in Melbourne for me to sift through, and where to get the records. 'Ross' doesn't ring a bell, though I will go through other branches from further back. I'm off to bed, I really need my beauty sleep :) Lyn in southern NSW ----------------- Message------------------------ From: Carmel M Reynen [mailto:fcfibre1@bigpond.com] Sent: Sunday, 5 March 2006 10:23 PM Subject: another inheritance thing! My grandmother could remember when she was a young girl the family putting in money to send them. The first one was going to sail from Melbourne (Nan was born 1913, so maybe about 1920+), he had all the paperwork but was murdered in Melbourne - eeks I don't know his name. Mum's great aunt had told her she reckons he was bought off (or 'knocked off' in England), but didn't tell mum the names, excepting one was her Uncle Tom. Don't know if this was the first or second man. I don't know why he would've been sailing from Melbourne, all the relo's seem to have been living in Sydney (initially from Braidwood,NSW). ANYWAY, are there any record of murders from around 1920+ in Melbourne? I can look up all her uncles in my tree, and see if any match.
