One thing you need to keep in mind is that any certificate numbers from B.D & M are covered by copyright, so be careful if you are thinking of doing this more so if you are going to be selling the book but if it's only for family use it may not be as bigger issue, to cover your self would be if you scanned the whole certificate and used it within the book but if you are only going to quote number you got from Diggers BD & M remember they are covered by copyright laws. Hello everyone, I wonder if I could ask a question, particularly of the experts on this list, regarding publishing personal details. I am on the verge of publishing my family history and over the years (as have all of us) collected the birth, marriage, death, Will, education, employment, divorce and adoption information, not to mention one or two "secrets", of all my relatives. I am aware of the "etiquette" of not publishing the personal information about living people, even if they have given me their permission to do so. However, what I want to ask is this: Is it against the law to publish this information and, if so, what if I have permission to publish by virtue of the fact I have been told the information? Do I have to get permission from every individual, or would a parent's permission be acceptable for their children? If I can't publish personal information, can I then publish photos of these living people? I will be printing about a dozen copies only, half of which will go to the U.K. and the other half to various States in Australia. I have seen some websites that just give the word "Living" when referring to a family member but my personal opinion is that it is hardly worthwhile including them if you can't at least give their first name, or sex. In fact, what I had thought of doing to overcome the privacy thing, was just to include first name and the year of an event that related to them, but have decided just to put their first name only. Before doing so, however, I thought I should check to see if someone has a definitive answer. Seems to me that after seven years of collecting, it's a real anti-climax if I can't include the names of the hundreds of family members living. What sort of boring family history is it that the first half is fully detailed and interesting, and the second half just repeats the word "Living"! All thoughts and opinions would be appreciated. Jan.

I had some earlyish settlers in Gardiners Creek. They build their house on the Cnr of Wattle Tree and Glenferrie Sts which I understand is in Malvern now. Can anybody tell me what's there now??? A big thanks to Carol, for the links, Carmel, the information was given to the lady from a Swedish Church. Pehr's home parish and mother received an official note from the Swedish Consul in Melbourne that the former mariner, Pehr Victor PETERSON had died on that date and on this his address 121 Dank Street, Albert Park, Melbourne. I have also received a bit more info that he may be under Per Viktor PETERSSON however being in Australia I would imagine his name was altered to something else. His mother's name was Emma Matilda Israelsson and Father: Peter Gustavsson. Thanks also to Travis, for looking at Brighton Cemetery, Chris for looking at Melbourne General and St Kilda, Maria for her lookup at Fawkner Cemetery and Lyn. He would have been 54 years old when he died. Kind regards Kerry

Thankyou everyone for solving my silver tray mystery. I had no idea that my grandma belonged to something like that, she mustn't have kept up the membership after she moved to NSW, but then she did have 7 children in quick succession and would have had her hands full. Regards Alison
Hello Kerry I have checked the Fawkner Cemetery online .. NO LUCK you should also check for the his first name spelt Pierre also Peter I have come across different spellings and you may find him listed under these christian names.. - don't rule out any possibilities that name may be spelt different I will check my other resources at home and get back to you cheers from Maria Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 16 march 2006 On 3/15/06, Kerry Hall <kerhall@bigpond.net.au> wrote: > > Would someone on the list have access to cemetery records for the > Melbourne area? P.A.F.S. = Protestant and Alliance Friendly Society. They were a friendly society and also had lodges where they had monthly meetings, they had ranks and regalia - thinks of the Masonic order as an example of ranks and regalia, the main different is that it was open to both sexes, hence the reference to Sister, and indeed a Sister could be the head of the local lodge. I know a bit about it as many years ago in Victoria it was provided a private health insurance system too and as it was the best deal I ever saw, I joined the scheme, this ipso facto also made you a member of the other side so I used to get the monthly newsletter about the doings of the various lodges too At one time Friendly Societies were a big deal here in Australia, and for interest it think PAFS in NSW may still be operatiional Tom
I have sent a reply directly to the person who asked the question, but I thought the list might like to know as well. Try the Victorian Department of Human Services at 50 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, 3000. Phone: 1300 650 172. They have responsibility for child care and I believe you may be able to access files held by them. There may be a fee involved. One relative obtained a mine of information on her husband's mother and grandmother, both on file with the department. I believe from a conversation recently with someone that Victoria had/has child welfare laws since 1868, so I am only suggesting they may be of assistance. Linda

I'm not precisely sure of the exact name, but it may have been Protestant Alliance Friendly Society. I don't know its precise structure, but there was probably a local branch in Kensington, I would think. Some of these societies still exist, but I don't know about that one - it might possibly have been taken over in comparatively recent times (like forty years ago) by another organisation, such as IOOF or IOR or AOF - do these mean anything? :-) Independent Order of Oddfellows, Independent Order of Rechabites and Ancient Order of Foresters, and others of course. They all had the same aim of providing sickness and unemployment benefits for members, but they also had a pretty active social side to the organisation. I would think there would have been a local Kensington Branch of PAFS. http://www.australianunity.com.au/au/info/companyhistory.asp This will give you a bit of an idea of what they were all about.
