Hi Shelley I have had a quick look at the Victorian BDM's for your Florence, but with no luck, so I searched for Leah and still no luck. There was a Florence Murray b in 1867 cert # 13637 at The Lodden (Castlemaine area) but with different parents from what you stated below. Are you sure she was born in Victoria?? I will keep looking for different variations and let you know if I find anything - do you have her father's name by any chance?? Can anyone help me with a birthplace/birthdate date for Florence Sarah Murray? I think she was born in Melbourne around 1867 and I'm keen to find out more about her and her family, especially her father. Her mother's maiden name was Caroline M Barnet and I believe she had a sister called Leah. Ring any bells? Thanks, Shelley
Hello Jenny, Thank-you, that was quick. I've just been looking a your site hopeing to find a rele, no luck yet but will be back Thanks again Denise
Does some kind person have acsess to naturalisation records? I have the record for my Great grandfather Peter Mathieson, naturalised, March 1911. I would like to know if his father Peter and wife Carren (Nee Gutarmsen) Mathieson were also naturalised, they were originally from Norway. How would I find the ship they arrived on? Thank-you Denise
Thanks very much for that, Chris, think we may have found James Curtis's death in 1901 but Maria FARRANT is still a mystery, an old relative said she came to Victoria with her parents and at least one sister named Florence and is sure they stayed in Victoria all the time. I can't find a marriage or a death for her, she had at least 9 children and they all stayed in Victoria. Her youngest child Florence, would have only been 7 years of age when her husband died and Florence never married and died in Moe I am going to take a guess and say she lived with her. Any other clues greatly appreciated Lynne SA -------Original Message------- From: Chris Bryce Date: 03/24/06 14:54:28 To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-MELB] Curtis and Farrant Some of the births for the children have the father as Charles James Curtis Some of the childrens death's show father as being James Wayland Curtis or Arthur James Wallen Curtis or James Weylan. Hi Denise, Have a look at the National Archives web site. http://www.naa.gov.au/ Go to "Record Search" at the bottom left of the page. "Search now as a guest" or register and search as a user. In the "Keywords" box put in Mathieson. (You will get over 200 records!) Select "Canberra" as the location to bring the count down to 160. Even though that is a lot of records, have a look at them as there are some Military records that also may be of interest. I tried putting in Peter and Carren but didn't find anything so they may have been recorded as Pieter etc. When you find something interesting click on the blue control symbol title to see more details. Then click on "request digital copy at no charge". Fill in your details and then wait. It may take them a few months to do the scanning, but when it's done, you'll be able to view or save the files on your own Pc. best wishes, Jenny Coates Melbourne's Unemployed in the 1890s http://home.primusonline.com.au/jennyc/Melbourne/ -----Original Message----- From: Denise & Peter <dapw@globe.co.nz> To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, 25 Mar 2006 16:23:00 +1200 Subject: [AUS-MELB] Naturalisation Help Does some kind person have acsess to naturalisation records? My parents surname Jones received a telegram sent to 116 Yarra Street Abbotsford in 1948. On our last trip to Victoria I went to Yarra Street to see the house. I would appreciate it if sks has access to a Melbourne PO directory if they could look up this address in 1948 to see if my parents names are listed. Also where can I access rates books for Abbotsford? Regards Kathryn in Qld
Many thanks to all who answered my query. Maybe when I come down to Melbourne I may try local newspapers. I have a query which I hope sks will help me with. I have been trying to find death/funeral notices for ancestors mainly in the 1960's, and 1970's but don't seem to be able to find them. I have looked in the Age and the Herald Sun at the Sydney State Library and was wondering if there was another newspaper around these times that I have overlooked. I have approx 30 people. Maureen Some of the indexes for these are in Ballarat. Send me some more detail and I will have a look on Monday. (They are only open 2 days a week) I also have a friend who tries to get to Melbourne once a fortnight or so and takes a car load so I may be able to follow it up for you at some stage. If you do get to Melbourne you need to order your records before you get there. If you take a digital camera you are able to photograph much of it. There are a few restrictions but you just ask at the counter as you pick them up and they will give you a copyright form to fill in so they know what you have photographed. The pics come up well. I took my laptop and was able to download straight from my camera to the computer and check the pics were clear. Thank you Carmel, This fellow was given a ToL in Dec 1851 so I'd guess he spent time somewhere prior to Pentridge as his sentence was three years. I have on a few occasions contacted the PROV but have been told that I would need to visit. I am hoping to get to Vic early in 2007.
