    3. Hello All, I have a copy of the Ticket of Leave for Thomas Fowler dated 29th Dec 1851. He was convicted on 16th July 1850 and sentenced to three years hard labour. Received at Pentridge Dec 9th 1850. I don't know where he was from July to Dec. He was given two months additional sentence for refusing to work in August 1851. Does anyone know why he would be allowed a ToL in Dec 1851 if his sentence was three years hard labour on the roads of the colony? Also is it possible for his ToL to be dated after his actual release? I know this sometimes happened in NSW with convicts. He was supposed to meet and marry his 'wife' in November 1851. She was fresh off the boat in late October. If he was in jail, how would they meet? Any ideas would be appreciated. Kind regards Maureen

    3. Hi Elaine, Don't give up on ranked searches. You can set the programme so that it only shows four star matches (ie those that are close to your exact guidelines). I have stumbled across a number of ancestors using ranked searches.... one in particular because the fellow in question had had his name copied incorrectly onto a census.. spelled Hall instead of Hull. Exact searches are fine if your ancestors stayed put, were literate enough to spell their names correctly and didn't fib about where they were born and how old they were! Ranked searches are helpful for the brick walls! Happy hunting Maureen ---- Elaine Jefferson <jeffersoneb@patash.com.au> wrote: > My so called problem with Ancestry.com was that I was imputting RANKED > searches instead of Direct searches Much learning here i can tell you as I > have only been a member of this site for just a month and Norton Anti Virus > is staying for another 12 months as I impressed Have seen so many versions > of how good it is and how not good it isn't but I have had no problems and > my ISP server is great > Gladys may I ask abour surname Koetsveld off list please > > Elaine > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "TRACY & DAVID" <BITEME-66@xtra.co.nz> > To: <AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, March 27, 2006 4:03 PM > Subject: Re: [AUS-MELB] Ancestry.com > > > > Dear Gladys > > Are you refering to the problem with Norton Anti Virus? > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: "Gladys Koetsveld" <muscat55@bigpond.com> > > To: <AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com> > > Sent: Monday, March 27, 2006 4:44 PM > > Subject: Re: [AUS-MELB] Ancestry.com > > > > > >> Please tell us how you solved it. > >> > >> Gladys > >> > >> Elaine Jefferson wrote: > >>> tracey > >>> have figured away around my problem. I realise that the age given for Florence isn't a match, but it's not far off, I guess. She would have been 24 rather than 29, but once again there could have been an error at some stage along the line. The ship arrived in May on an unspecified (in the index) date. Seeing they married early in April, they could have got straight on the boat and arrived at the end of May. Don't know. The actual passenger list would be held at the Public Record Office Victoria. I'm not familiar with the coverage of that index, so there could be other passenger arrivals, especially after 1923, which might be relevant. The Will Probate papers would be held at PROV. You might want to try getting hold of some death notices seeing you have the date of death, and see what was put in the paper at the time. The Melbourne Sun would be the most likely paper for death notices. Possibly you might find it on microfilm at some institution near you (University library, British Library???), or contact the State Library of Victoria direct and ask them to look at it for you. Given your distance I think it likely that they would do this for you, especially as you have a specific date. Death certificates information can be located here http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servlet/bdm_home Good luck, Lenore Frost Essendon, Vic

    3. Hi All, Let me remind you that The Melbourne General Cemetery Disk is only for all headstones, any burials that are there and with out a head stone will not be listed it not the fact it has been missed it is that there is no headstone so to say they are not there is not right! And in this case the person is making a very wide spread comment using Richmond being next to Collingwood, as Abbotsford and Fitzroy are in between. Try looking in St Kilda Cemetery? 3. As most of you would know I'm pretty easy going, but I would have thought the Virus warnings at the bottom of any mail from the list would have been enough for anyone to understand that it's off topic likewise with Norton's or any other brand as it has nothing to do with Genealogy what so ever! So please may I once again ask you to stick to "Genealogy please?" Thanks, Ray Melbourne List Admin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gladys Koetsveld" <muscat55@bigpond.com> To: <AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 27, 2006 2:44 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-MELB] Ancestry.com > Please tell us how you solved it. > > Gladys > > Elaine Jefferson wrote: >> tracey >> have figured away around my problem.
