HI all that have responded to this post. I agree with Margaret & Gaylene that "we with the resources" can assist people at our leisure. It's the enjoyment, fun & excitment we get helping others to find what we all require - those missing pieces of our jigsaws. WE do also make friends this way. Just yesterday, I spent approx half an hour doing a look up for someone on this list & was ready to send all the details to the person and found that they had cross posted on another list and the same reply I had ready to go had already been answered. Should I have been angry and addressed that person "off list" to say you have wasted my time - NO, I was happy the person was given the correct details - it is the pleasure you get in helping other people. As for the rostered days to do look ups, just wouldn't work for me - I have 5 children that all want to use one of the two computers we have hooked up to internet, and of course always the same time I do, also I work full time, if I had to work to a roster - nothing would ever get done - I am lucky to make it to work on time. I also would like MY time to keep searching for my own pieces of the worlds bigest jigsaw that has no sides. I am now getting off my soap box - sorry Ray Darlene >From: "MargM" <genknut@optusnet.com.au> >Reply-To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com >To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [AUS-MELB] REGARDING LOOKUPS - >Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2006 23:20:49 +1000 > > >----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan" <janealogy@westnet.com.au> >To: <AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 8:33 PM >Subject: [AUS-MELB] REGARDING LOOKUPS - STUART/KIRKPATRICK > > >>Hello everyone, >> >>Firstly, let me thank very much the three members of this list who have >>been very generous in looking up the details for me of the >>STUART/KIRKPATRICK request I made. >> >>Secondly, what struck me immediately was that these three people had done >>exactly the same job, when the efforts and generosity of one person would >>have been sufficient. > >Hi Jan > >>So. You also need to consider the old Northcote Cemetery and also Coburg, or also don't forget Kew? Hello everyone, Firstly, let me thank very much the three members of this list who have been very generous in looking up the details for me of the STUART/KIRKPATRICK request I made. Secondly, what struck me immediately was that these three people had done exactly the same job, when the efforts and generosity of one person would have been sufficient. So. I have a suggestion that perhaps Ray (List Admin.) may wish to comment on, as perhaps he would need to oversee/organise this. What if all of you with BDM cd's (or any other resource) work out a day of the week that each of you would be prepared to do a lookup for the rest of us, and any request that comes in on that particular day, then that person does the lookup. The results of the lookup still to be sent to the list, but I just think it would be a much fairer system to share the load, than to have several people spending their own time to find out the same information as each other. Hope I've made sense! What do you think? Jan.
Marina did you get this information from Digger : Pioneer Index Victoria 1836-1888? Do not rule out the St Kilda Cemetery? you'll have to check the web sites .. there is several sites available. I did some volunteer work for a family that lived and died in Collingwood during this period of time.. all were located at this above cemetery.. worth a try. I am also look for you .. if I find it I'll send it to you.. a web site of genealogy volunteers in Victoria that may have these records on cd.... if I locate the source I'll email you back ASAP. sincerely Maria Melbourne, Victoria, Australia On 3/29/06, Marina & Bruce Borland <matilda@snap.net.nz> wrote: > > Looking for the cemetery where these people were buried, and records if > possible. Hi Marina............i noticed your WORSLEY family and wondered if they may be connected to mine somehow....my Mum's maiden name was WORSLEY and they lived in Dandenong (I still live close by)........i don't recognise the names of your family but thought it was worth asking. About your family....would William Worsley have been buried at Dandenong cemetery? Hello Carmel, Thank you for your email. Nice to hear from you. Thanks for the website, which looks rather familiar, so guess have had a look at it. Yes, very aware about on-line records, and transcriptions from headstones only. Because what I require is relatively early know that problems could occur. Have to write to Melbourne General so will ask of course, and just maybe something will arise. Obtaining death cert's may be the only solution in some of these instances, but I wonder about the data cited for early cert's, as sometines they can be disappointing. Marina A lot of online cemetery records are of the headstones, unmarked graves usually need to be looked up by the cemetery trust unless they have put the records online themselves. ( I stand to be corrected here??) the only other way to find where they are buried is on the death certificates. I know these can be expensive but will give you definite cemetery where they are buried. The other site you could check is www.ozgenonline.com/aust_cemeteries/ this will take you to all cemeteries in Australia, but do remember many only have pics or information from the headstones, I estimate about 1/3 of all burials, but there is usually a contact for information on other burials. Also some cemeteries have lost records, either through fire or such, so still may not be able to help. Hi Lyn Great to hear from you ,hope you are keeping well ,,yes this Kenneth is a real problem ,,,what I'm trying to do is to find which Kenneth I should be obtaining the marriage information for. When I search the PROV site the only Kenneth I come up with has a father named Kenneth which is correct but the mother is Margaret Butler instead of Margaret Smith..and according to the Lancefield cemetery info he would have been born in 1847 not the 1844 that was on his marriage details??? Information from a very distant relation Geraldine Fennessy (Melbourne) who is related to John McKenzie (born 4/1/1843) has said that that on the birth information of the oldest son George (born 1839) the mother is recorded as Margaret Butler. Confusion reigns. Regards and take care. Ron -- Ron McKenzie Email: ronmac@tadaust.org.au Phone: 07-38141490 Brisbane Australia
Hi Marina, Just in case you didn't have the direct email of Melbourne General. G'day, my understanding is that during that era, a ToL operated similarly to parole today. I have never researched the Victorian system, but am familiar with VDL & NSW. Once granted, the ToL allowed a prisoner a degree of liberty, conditional upon him residing in a specified district; being of good behaviour; etc. So, it would be granted prior to the date when his sentence would otherwise expire. I am aware that when a ToL was misplaced or damaged, a replacement would be issued. Perhaps the ToL you refer to was a replacement, and tha might explain the discrepancy between the date of release, and the issue of that ToL. Re July to Dec: didn't Old Melbourne Gaol overlap with Pentridge for a long time ? Peter THOMAS Darwin, AUSTRALIA <pmthomas@bigpond.com> -----Original Message----- From: player6 [mailto:player6@bigpond.com] Sent: Tuesday, 28 March 2006 9:23 AM To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Ticket of Leave Hello All, I have a copy of the Ticket of Leave for Thomas Fowler dated 29th Dec 1851. He was convicted on 16th July 1850 and sentenced to three years hard labour. Received at Pentridge Dec 9th 1850. I don't know where he was from July to Dec. He was given two months additional sentence for refusing to work in August 1851. Does anyone know why he would be allowed a ToL in Dec 1851 if his sentence was three years hard labour on the roads of the colony? Also is it possible for his ToL to be dated after his actual release? I know this sometimes happened in NSW with convicts. He was supposed to meet and marry his 'wife' in November 1851. She was fresh off the boat in late October. If he was in jail, how would they meet? Any ideas would be appreciated. Kind regards Maureen ______________________________
Hi Ron, still looking for the elusive divorce? I don't think you will find one. My thought is that kenneth just walked out on MaryAnn early in the marriage. probably after the 2nd girl was born. I think MaryAnn was probably a servant to the man mentioned on the 1st girls dcert. He (or her employer) is most likely the father of Angus.
