Thanks for your very kind email Carmel. The information you sent is much appreciated. As I have mention to several other kind souls, James came out from Scotland (as a little boy) with his parents and several siblings to the Melbourne area (around 1860 and I'm not yet sure how) . After they arrived, James' parents went on to produce a further five children. So I am having LOTS of fun and games trying to sort them all out, Shelley > No death before 1901 that I can see but there are some entries below that > may be of interest to you Carmel

I understand that there is a memorial on the corner of Queen Street and Therry Street in Melbourne to the 9000 persons still buried under the Queen Victoria Market site - Old Melbourne Cemetery. Is this correct? If so, is there some kind person, who may be visiting the site, who could take a photograph of this memorial for me please. Have also read about a memorial "Passage" to these 9000 persons, at the Market. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks. Regards, Marina New Zealand

If you were not a British Citizen,, then the only time it really mattered was if you wanted to buy land, then you had to be naturalized. So if you were talking about someone coming out from the UK, then they were a British Citizen weren't they? Tom

Hello, I would like to thank MargM, Jenny, Carmel, Jackie and Tom who responded to my questions about Immigrant House and naturalization papers. I confess that I had forgotten that Australia used to be a colony. I will have a look through the archives for Immigrant House. Best wishes, Linda --------------------------------- Yahoo! Linda It depends what time frame you are looking at and where they came from. In the early days those from English colonies did not need to be naturalized, but if they came from other countries and wanted to receive a pension or own land (and I stand to be corrected) needed to be naturalized. The National Archives have a searchable web page for these. Hi Carmel After researching my own family for quite a few years, I have found that unless it was a "legal" adoption that no formal records were kept, but it did depend upon the institution of where the children were left. My own grandmother had 6 children she 'gave' 2 away to family members who grew up believing that their parents were real, (which happened frequently in the 1940's) - 3 were given-left to a womans shelter in Broadmeadows who were eventually fostered out and only one was legally adopted out at birth. I guess I was lucky as the shelter in Broadmeadows does/did have records as my auntie found out all her details which found me! I think it now belongs to Penola Catholic Secondary College in Broadmeadows Victoria. Does anyone know anything about foster care in Vic during the 1930 -50s. I have a lady who was bought up in around Coburg with what she called a foster family. She was with them the whole time and even used their name but from what the family says she was not adopted. She has died now but her daughter is anxious to find out more about her mother's natural family mainly for health reasons. It appears this family had more than one foster child which leads me to believe they would be registered somewhere as foster parents, which would then tell who the foster children would be. I know there are some records at PROV but I don't imagine they would go up to this date. any hints or ideas would be great. Carmel
