    2. Lori, Do you know if your Ether Faulkners had a sister or is related to Rosina Falconer (I've seen this name spelt RoseAnna Faulkner on many papers/same person) born June 1805, Ireland, died June 29, 1876 in Hutchinsontown, Glasgow, Scotland. She married an Archibald Opray. Her parents were: father: John Falconer, mother: Agnes Hannah. Some of there children immigrated to Australia, were we have family now. Can't wait to here if we might have crossing family trees. Linda West Coast USA

    3. Go to the Brighton City council and they would have rate notice for the property and if you have just purchase the said property it will give you a list of all owner on the title From that, Bright C.C. should have on record applications for any building permits Regards, Ray. ----- Original Message ----- From: "margaret brookes" <mbrookes@vtown.com.au> To: <AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 04, 2006 9:22 AM Subject: [AUS-MELB] history of houses. > Hello, Although I feel I should know the answer to this question I plead > ignorance!! > > I wish to know how I begin finding out the history of a newly > purchased house in North Brighton which we think would have been built > around 1900? > > kind regards, Margaret Brookes. > > > ==== AUS-MELBOURNE Mailing List ==== > ==================================================== > If you wish to make personal contact with List Admin Ray at > batie@ozemail.com.au > > ============================== > View and search Historical Newspapers. 3. Hello Margaret Take a trip to your local library and see if they have the old rate books on fiche. This will give you the name of the owner and tenant along with the actual rates paid and arrears if any. The rate collectors didn't go right along the street and back the other side. Quite often they would turn down a side street and come back later do finish. This means that the street name may appear in different areas on the fiche. Some early records don't have house numbers as there may have been only a few houses built at that time. Regards Graham

    3. How lovely Graham! I can remember my grandfather talking about the throttle being on the steering column, and going up hills backwards. Only he said it was because reverse gear was lower than the lowest forward gear. He was quite upset because my car did not have a place to fit a crankhandle.. And because I did not drive with the window open to do hand signals. Dawn - born 1947, Melbourne -----Original Message----- From: Doris & Graham Brittain [mailto:iona9@optusnet.com.au] Sent: Wednesday, 3 May 2006 7:45 PM To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-MELB] Private hospitals Greetings This gives my age away, but I can remember second hand Model "T" Fords for sale in Hawthorn Victoria, in a car yard for between 5 and 10 pounds. This was in the mid 1930's, during the depression years. In 1948 we drove one to Philip Island. It was rather unique in that it had a genuine Ford two speed rear axle, known as a Ruxtall Axle. They were certainly different to drive than other cars, because of the transmission. The accelerator was on the steering wheel, and there were three pedals on the floor, one for the brake one for reverse and one for low gear. When the low gear pedal was released into the up position the car went into top gear, as there was only two forward speeds. To stop the car taking off in top gear it was necessary to engage the handbrake in the half on position. The petrol tank was under the front seat so that when the car was taken up a steep hill the tank was higher than the carburettor, which stopped the engine. One remedy was to pressurise the fuel tank slightly. There are stories about salesmen saying that model "T"'s would even go up steep hills backwards. In fact it was the only possible way. 3. Hello, is anyone researching this name? Marion CUNNING married John GREY (GRAY on some records) on 21 Jan. 1859 They lived at Tullamarine and Keilor. John died 27 May 1914 aged 81 years and is buried in the Melbourne Central Cemetery. I have no idea of when Marion died, nor where she was buried. I have all the children, including the entries with incorrect spelling and know where they and John are buried. Cheers, Bob
